Whats for Launch?

Re: Whats for Launch?

This is a side thought...but for anti lag if you were to say, ground out the coolant temp sensor wouldn't that make the truck think that it was -50C and pull a bunch of timing, so much so that you could effectivly run it as an anti lag on the line if it was hooked up to a switch? Pulling a bunch of timing would dump alot of fuel into the exhaust and help spool the turbo, as well as taking all the power away fromthe motor while still allowing it to spin at a higher rpm on the line, thus also helping to spool the turbo. just a thought, I;ve never really looked into it.

I dont believe that would happen. It could do the fuel part but doubtfully the timing aspect.

Re: Whats for Launch?

but could you set it to react that way in Code 59 on the timing vs. coolant temp table?

Re: Whats for Launch?

I think the dumping tons of fuel in the exhaust and ignition it is done with only extreme race only vehicles. My bb turbo spools really quickly so its not an issue i have dealt with, but the above spooling practice is not one i would do for my street vehicle.

Adding timing and lean out the mixture will spool the turbo quicker.

Re: Whats for Launch?

i have a 3k stall tc with a pt67dbb and it spools fast. that is why i bought a 2 step so i can play with the launch, because boostbreaking will spin the tires at 7psi, and it's verry hard to know where the point of traction is,

Re: Whats for Launch?

Thats basically how an anti-lag system works isn't it? Or at least the functiosn it performs, adding 'combustion' to the exhaust before the turbo, and taking away 'load' from the engine so that it is still spinning the turbo up but not actually putting down any real power. This would be something you would be using to spool a LARGE turbo, and you wouldn't be doing everytime you drove it, just something to really launch it, like froma dig, or even from a roll race. You would really hurt something if you just held down the 'button'. Again this is just a thought, based on what I know about anti lag and how it could be applied to our trucks the easiest and cheapest.

lso, this something that I have seen done on builds like mine for my blazer that i am building. Its only 1 of 2 ways to really spool something that big on something that small (3800 spooling a 76mm). The other option is nitrous.

This sounds like a good recipe, I have a few questions for you if you dont mind me asking.

What brand TC? and what did the manufactuer rate the stall at?

What does your foot brake stall the TC at?

What rpm are you launching at 7psi spining?

What cam/heads? What Trans?

The 67gtq would spool slower than a Dbb67 I would amagine, but how much of a differance? I wonder if the DBB is whats allowing you to spool the 67 at such a lower RPM range.

i think it is a TCI TC (i bought this project truck from turbomaniacal, there should be a build thread somewhere)
i think my stall is around 3700 while breakboosting..
http://www.youtube.com/user/Rene198025?feature=mhee#p/u/9/qB62M6jekGg

cam is 422 and trans is a 700r4.

been at the track 2 times without having 2 step. second time my MSD digital took a track..
running 118mph tops with crappy 60 ft.

i had a pt61 non dbb on my other truck with vortecs and the pt67dbb is killer! always had a lag with my pt61 on the ty (vortecs 412 etc)
there is a combination ofcourse in stall, tuning and setup. but for me the Dbb proved to be the right choice

This is a given. The DBB version (billet wheel excluded) will give you a 3-400RPM savings on a stall speed. The gtq and 67DBB SHOULD make to the end of the track at the same time if not very close however, the DBB will spool faster. I talked to PTE about this about 2 weeks ago and this is basically what I was told. The Billet wheeled 67 however, will out perform due to the design.

So, you could realistically, run a 67DBB with a 3k converter. Problem is, the DBB costs $2500 and most people don't want to pay that for a turbo.

Realistically im thinking a 2500 stall would spool the 67dbb turbo at 3000 instead of 3700 while using the foot brake. Being able to bring on the boost at 3000rpm or less seems to have the best results. The peak torque curve of our engines depending on mods seems to be between 2000-3000rpm.

Being able to do so would yeild a faster truck out of the whole in my opinion, taking more advantage of torque multiplication made in the peak torque RPM range.

Re: Whats for Launch?

After watching the video of your launch, I would say you are deffinatly between the 3000-3500 mark at 0psi. Once you hit zero is going to be your brake stall. I would have to say that is one very well made converter and that match's that 67dbb perfect. Basically new information I have learned has led me to believe when choosing a stall speed undershoot by 500rpm to realistically get what RPM your looking a stalling your TC against the foot brake.

You would of course choose your turbo size accordingly, all based on your peak torque rpm of your engine.

Ive drove a few trucks with 9/11 2800's and they didnt brake stall till 3200, that 400rpm gone to waist. What im getting at is wouldnt you want to stall your TC at or before your engines peak torque output rpm to gain the best holeshot.

Take two identical trucks launching at the same time, one at 3000rpm at 5psi and one at 4000rpm at 10psi what truck is going to pull harder out of the hole?

Re: Whats for Launch?

Im thinking the second one as long a traction is not an issue. Let say the first guy has no traction issue and cuts a 1.7 60' The second guy with traction issues can fix the problem and likely cut a 1.5 or so.

Both trucks get same traction, both trucks make peak torque at 3000rpm.

Re: Whats for Launch?

I am no expert. But I think your trucks modded the peak torque is higher than 3000. I haven't looked at a lot of dyno sheets. But the few I have looked at were trucks with quite a few mods. I don't remember looking at any dyno results on the PTE67 turbo but I would think the peak torque would be more than 3k. I would think 3k would be closer to a stock trucks peak torque. Here is a post that has some torque numbers. Yes this engine has a large turbo. But it gives you a idea of the range of torque we have with these trucks.

Yeah, IMO, if neither ends up with traction issues, the second will leave way harder. That excess RPM isn't wasted if its getting to the ground. I could be wrong though.

Re: Whats for Launch?

The truck leaving at higher boost/rpm and NOT having traction issues will have the better ET as it will accelerate harder and faster. The only time I can think of that this isn't a good idea, is if it too close to redline/shift point and won't have enough rpm range to last the entire length of the track.

Re: Whats for Launch?

10psi at 4000 rpm is going have more hp and torque.

I think your trying to ask is if the a truck hook with only 5psi, would it better with a stall of 3000 rpm or 4000 rpm.

Re: Whats for Launch?

Ok, so i guess my real question im trying to point out is..... Say we put a 2800-3000 TC in a stock SyTy, It will become slower in ET than before with the factory TC?
