Yank vs. 9/11

Neither, I seem to be the only one spooling a 20g14cm on unported l35 heads. It's a stock TC and spools super fast starting to build boost on the brake at 2200. Wastegate is a forge with a blue spring. I have no problem cutting 1.80 60's on radial kumho's in my TY at 35psi. I launch at about 2800rpm at 8psi

Re: Yank vs. 9/11

I had the Yank SS3600 in my cammed LS1 Trans Am with a TR224 cam. It is a very tight converter and even with a stall speed of 3600 it was very tight (2.5 STR), not at all sloppy or loose feeling which was a big concern of mine. Loved that converter!!! I had a Pro Torque 2800 stall prior to that and it was very loose feeling.
My buddies even drove that car with that converter and were very impressed with it. Around town, car drove pretty much like stock.
From what I was told with guys who had them, not from first hand experience, Precision converters are looser but also preform very well.
I was VERY happy with my Yank converter!!

I have a Yank converter in one of my trucks also. It is a great converter.

my major prob is the altitude. at sea level with my stock heads, stock TC, alky it spooled the 20g14cm just fine, but up in the clouds, its no bueno

I may do your build up first, and then change convertor with the next build. What are all the major components of your build? What kind of 1/8th, and 1/4 mile times do you run?

Do you seriously want me to send you that 9/11?

My best in the 1/8 was 8.30, I've been working down towards my 12 second goal on pump gas. When I first started tuning the BS3 I hit 13.6 first time out. Second time 13.4, third time 13.2. I'm currently running 14* timing on 93 pump gas with 16-17psi. My goal is to hit a 12 on a nice cool evening then add meth to shoot for 12.50's.

Mods are; 20g, stock L35 heads, forge wastegate, no cat and ATR cat back, BS3 running 50lb injectors

The convertor flash's about 2600

Re: Yank vs. 9/11

I love the way my 9/11 stalls.Been using them for over 10 years.Rusty machines the back half to fit a oversize overdrive clutch. It should be locked up by the top of 2nd gear.In my sy It went 13.77 2.42 60ft with the Stock stall a 20g and stock exhaust. 9/11 went 12.57 @ 1.78 60 ft.I have a 9/11 in my Typhoon as well. It's very impressive.I have not used a Yank.........

Agreed.

I don't think using a different wastegate would spool you up here. On my friend Chris' Typhoon we installed an external and he was still on the stock converter and we couldn't get it to spool period. Not even by forcing the gate shut. Once he put the converter in he was able to boogie. Although I have no experience with this Forge gate, I don't see how it would be any better than using an external forced shut. I mean, closed is closed.

And Rusty is the man when it comes to 9/11's. He did ours and it drove awesome in every way. To get the 9/11 to behave well on the street some things need to be done in the transmission first which many people aren't even capable of doing. I am also using a 9/11 in my 4l80e and am extremely impressed with it. I think as long as you find someone who uses decent parts in them they are OK and I have read the articles about why they suck and have yet to experience a real failure with one.

My wife's Ty ran 13.4@97 with a 1.7 60' with a 20g turbo, 9/11, 60# injectors 91 pump stock IC, code59 and 14* of timing. and 15psi.

A customers truck of mine is stock, stock chip, stock turbo, ect... I put a forge gate with blue spring in it here in texas. He drove the truck through Denver on his way to live in Tahoe. He had no problems spooling the turbo and claimed it did just as good of a job if not better than here in texas. And I know JAY in Wyoming is using one with good results also on a stock turbo/TC

Re: Yank vs. 9/11

Its a stock turbo......They don't have problems spooling and Im sure it helped. The stock waste gate/Chip come's open sooner than a spring w a mechanical waste gate.

na dude, i was just messin, i dont wanna have to pull it again...

I am kinda curious tho...

I didn't think so, but was gonna check anyways.

Running the numbers, you should be a real high 12 now...about a 12.94. Is the 20g stock also? How much do you think I would be losing not using something like the BS3 to tune with? I do have some 50# injectors that I could use also.

Remember something here, the stock ECM has gone 10's. BS3 is great and I am contemplating getting it but only because of my injector and fuel situation. There is no real reason to get it on a stockish build unless you have the money to throw in to it or get a smoking deal on it. IMO, it's just overkill for most set ups. I've read Eric's progress with it and it seems like a great tool but bottom line, those numbers aren't any better than what I have seen people do with stock ECM's and a few hours of tuning. Look at my wife's old Ty, 13.40 with a 1.7 60' 15psi and 14* timing on pump no meth and code59. Are you really going to tell me that just by using BS3 with all of the same factors is going to net me a faster time? I don't think so.

Also factor that is up here at altitude.

$2800 vs $500ish for the same end result, I'd do some serious thinking before spent that kind of money, unless you're going to run that 74, then I'd be all over it.

Re: Yank vs. 9/11

mike, you wanna do a real world test with different converters lol?

cam your numbers are sound. except you forget the 1 sec loss for altitude.

also keep that in mind with mikes misery for 10s....its been done sea level/stock ecm, but he may be pushing the envelope

My BS3 was 1850 and I put it on the stockish Ty to practice and learn with it before using it to tune my built motor in the Sy. I look at it as an investment, I will never have to deal with changing the chip or dealing with the tune being reliable on a stock ECM. I would agree that my Ty should be in the high 12's, I'm working on it and haven't had the best track conditions my last two trips.

I won't disagree to say either that the same times could be accomplished with stock ECU. To me I couldn't justify having new technology vs dealing with spending nearly half the cost of the Big stuff on the old ECM.

Bottom line I don't think a 2800 stall will yield cam faster times. He has other ways to spend money and go faster rather than a TC. Now if he wants to upgrade the turbo/cam than he should consider a TC.

Contact Mike at forge Motorsport in Florida. Be sure and tell him it's for a stock or 20g turbo. I would ask for a blue and red spring. Look up the thread in the GP forum, Jay has some detailed pics installed on a stock turbo. The springs have a sweet spot you will need to find to yield solid boost. To tight or to loose will yield spikes. When you get close, make half turn adjustments. Disconnect the stock solenoid and run straight to the actuator or use a electronic boost controller. Be ready for super fast spool! And solid boost control.

The results are night and day, no high stall required
