Viscous Coupler Whats Inside!

Took some pics of the inside of a viscous coupler, though some people would want to know.

I didn't count how many plates but there are a LOT.

The plates alternate, heavy viscous fluid inside that is getting sheared as they spin at different speeds.

You could have at least given credit for who "donated" the coupler for the pics.:rant:

Also there was some kind of wire used as a spacer in betweeen clutches. The clutches were a very thin pliable metal.:tup:

Hell if that is the case, can I have my name written across the side of your syclone in big letters?

Half that truck was once on or slatted to be on my own typhoon.

Was there very much fluid left in it?
What was the 'problem' or symptoms with it that led to it being scrapped?
It looks like some of the elements have heat-damage. Indicates severe speed mis-match?
How do the wire spacers 'index' to seperate the plates?

Fascinating stuff. Thanks for the pics.

It was from my truck about 3 1/2 years ago. It was split open with no fluid when we took apart the broken transfer case(broken planatery gears). The clutches turn in opposite directions. Probably were the discoloring came from.

As far as the wires and indexing....When we finished cuting it apart the clutches kind of sprung everywere. There was alot of clutches in there. 125 or so. I would guessestimate.

Oh, no they don't.

The entire clutch assembly turns in the same direction. Matter-of-fact, everything in the T-case rotates in the same direction. Sometimes there are slight speed differences among various componets, but the direction is always the same. (Well, yes if you back up, it will go the other direction.....either Forward, or Reverse, everything in the case revolves in the same direction.) Think about it.........

Interesting. Sounds like the elements are pre-loaded together. The fluid is closely contained.

The "stack" was almost like a spring. Once in the housing I doubt they have much if any clearance.

You are right about moving in the same direction, and as you said maybe at slightly different speed depending on tire slip, etc.

For others if you look there are 2 style of plates, half index on the outer housing, the other half on the inner housing. I am no expert on this though I just get to take stuff apart just like mom told me not to when I was younger.

Jeremy did a good job of breaking the welds inside his truck, only about 3" or so of weld was left making this one easy to take apart. I have another I tryed to take apart 5yrs ago and gave up on.

Jeremy and I were just curious and bored 1 day, and thought others might want to see inside also.

It came from my Sy's Transfer case. When I cracked open the case the VC was already split open.:tdown:

The planetery was broken also. Don't know if the viscous coupler cracked open then locked up and broke planetery or the planetery broke first and cracked the VC.

Blake knew some company that was manufacturing new ones for something like a $180. Thats all I know. George was lurking on her this morning maybe he'll chime in......
