That blows Jimmy. Didn't one of your trannies get wasted before Nats a couple years ago?

Yeah, well I guess you can't DD 600 ft lbs with a best stuff money can buy 700R4.

The worst part aboot it is hearing my wife bitch, but after a minute she started sounding like Charlie Brown's teacher. :D

Time to upgrade

So, what were the stats and cost on this tranny you just smoked? I have had some tell me that they can build a bullet-proof 700r4 but I'm skeptical based on stories like this. Seems time and again someone says they can make the 700 bullet-proof then it craps the internals out less than a year later. Just trying to make the decision on which way I'm gonna go when my stocker finally craps out.

i love it when people underestimate a truck nice truck parish, ive been following it for awhile
now, i just love the "500 hp" zo6
all he hears is whoosh and sees smaller and smaller truck taillights!!

SS

hmmm, interesting...the new zo6 will do other things that truck will never do. So you must be talking 1/4 as i dont' see that thing doing 200mph +, being able to handle near what a new zo6 will do, amongs other things. But ya, 1/4 mile i guess you got a point.

You can't unring a bell, but I feel that I've got a little explaining to do.The intent of this post was just to express my opinion that I don't think 700's can stand to be thrashed daily with massive torque in front of them.

My truck is pushing 600 ft lbs.I drive it EVERDAY and I drive it HARD. I would not be surprised at all if I do 15 12psi boost launches a week. I have the super sticky Green Dots too.

I don't think any 700r4 could ever take the amount of abuse that I deliver. Not even if it was made out of solid titanium.

When any mechanical part is pushed to it's limits on a regular basis,it will eventually break.Every transmission problem I have ever had attests to this fact.I can't blame anybody but myself for this, and never have.

I'm sure if you had a built 700 that just saw occasional blasts,it would do just fine. If it was beat on unmercifully,it may not.

Atleast your having fun  I am going to give a built 700 one shot (especially since I have a bunch of money invested into tranny rebuild parts)

My 700r4 looks to hold fine .....then the "billet " TC balloned . Im going to use a new kind of 3-4s , custom made. I had to pay a lot to machine the new material but i think it worths it

Jimmy wich part keeps braking in your 700r4 ?

stock ratios and a PI 10.5" tripple disk converter with a stall speed around 2600. PI told me i could lock up that converter any time i want up to 1600hp. i have it locked on the dyno and i lock it at about 4500rpm in 2nd.

Thanks, man. You just saved me a bunch of money and I've heard nothing but good things about PI from the people that use them.

Jer, I've seen lots of stories where guys say they can build a bulletproof 700....then a syty gets it and then the "I've never seen that before" stories start and their warranty is void. If you have the money to do the 4L80, do it and be done with it.

Jimmy, I didn't mean to cut into your thread, just thought I'd ask a question or two while Parish was here. Sorry, dude. Sounds like your band may be giving out if it's starting to slip on downshift. You have a billet 2nd servo? Those will kick a 2-4 band's tail if they are used daily. Better off with an vette/syty servo on a daily driver. You've most likely bent the tab that sticks up that the servo's pin pushes on to engage it. Sounds like you done with the 700 though

i didn't mean to step on any toes. i went thru 2 of the best 4l60e tranny before i upgraded. best decision ever.

i get some prety good deals on stuff so i can't really say what it would cost prety sure it would be over $2000 and you need a core.

Re: **** 700r4's

Your not stepping on any toes in my opinion. This is relatively new ground for us. Did Chuck tell you what kind of clutches he put in it? I'm most likely gonna do the Transgo HD2 kit. Supposed to be good for a minimum of 900HP(says it in the directions anyway) and I'm using a 2000 core. I'm pretty sure I need the 34 element sprag
34418X.jpg

This Borg Warner intermediate sprag 34418X is an OEM direct replacement for performance 400 and 4L80-E applications. It has 34 elements, an O.D. of 3.816", and I.D. of 3.160" and a width of .571".

and I'm gonna use this:
34322-01.jpg

Sonnax now offers a replacement clutch hub 34322-01 for the GM 400, 425 & 4L80-E forward clutch assembly. This hub is made from an AISI 1045 steel forging.
I just need to figure out if I need to spend the money on the reds and blues or just get HiEnergy BW for it.

Look at my list of money pits in my signature and you'll see that it's not that I don't have the money but if we're talking $500-$600 for a build that will do the same as a $4,000 conversion I think you can understand why I'm trying to get more details. I'm just trying to make sure I have all the details when it lets go so I'm ready to make the right decision for me and my set-up.

Yeah, I've heard them too but this time it's a SyTy guy (Will) who is saying this guy in Denver can do it so it's not just some V8 tranny builder who doesn't understand the intricacies of our situation. That's why I'm torn because I want to believe that this built 700 will be different and save me thousands of dollars that I can put towards other things. Not crapping on the 4L80E idea because it is the route I was planning to go after reading all the threads about how sturdy they are, but let's face it... there are manufacturers that will build you a tranny for $15k that will hold some serious power too.. just trying to find the middle ground I guess and not spend more that I really need to.

So, I'm just adding more food for thought I guess as well as asking questions to help keep this conversation alive as I feel it's one of the more important R&D type debates this thread is doing now or has for some time. I'll check more into that 700R4 route I was talking about and report details and who knows, I might even try one myself and if it holds gobs of power for several years I can rebuild it over three times before I incur the cost of a 4L80E and not to mention more power to the pavement. More to come....

Sure, Jer. You pull that sucker 3 times and you will want to sell the truck. I'm gonna do it right once and be done so I can drive the thing instead of looking at it on jackstands.

Whatever you can find out on the trans, can you pass it along, Parish? I'm with Jimmy...post away.

Re: **** 700r4's

i honestly think a STOCK 4l80e with just a shift kit is as strong or stronger than any built 4l60e. when comparing costs of the two options keep that in mind.

a stock 4l80e with shift kit and the other stuff needed to put it in was less than $2000, a converter is another $600-$1000 but you need that for the 60e anyways. a fully monster built 4l60e will likly cost you more than the 4l80e conversion but is a lot easier to do.

if your going to compare a built 4l80e swap(another $2k+) to a built 4l60e then you need to remember you are geting a set up that will likely hold twice the power.

BTW. i made my best run to date on a STOCK 4l80e with just a shift kit. 4800lb's, 10.91@122. now i have a built motor and tranny but can't get the traction to get a better ET. i am running 125+mph now so i am making more power.

Re: **** 700r4's

I'm with everyone else on the sidelines waiting for more to do this conversion . I only know of Robert with this conversion and I dont see much from him about it . I just want to see proven results with pros and cons for our trucks . It seems like the right path , I just dont see anyone traveling it yet .

Re: **** 700r4's

What are you wanting to see? I mean, what are you wanting us to tell you after it's done? Like, how many boosted launches we do without breakage? Mileage? Trans temps? Quarter mile times before and after? Not sure what "waiting on the sidelines" means. I'm willing to share anything I can from my changeover but I don't know what you want. Total cost? There are several guys on here I've seen bust their trans at least twice. Paid for it twice. New converters twice. How about the comparison of 2 to 3 700 builds to the cost of one 4L80E build? I built mine up. It was $2200 with converter for 1 build. Flipped a sprag, broke a band and snapped an output shaft that took out a reaction shaft and rear planetary with it. Stock truck. This is me paying for parts and fixing it myself. I'm tired of laying under the truck.
I guess until you do it yourself and get sick of it or break it so many times you can't afford to fix it anymore and it sits you don't know. Kinda takes the fun out of ownership

Parish, let me know if you can share any of the info on the buildup of your trans. If Chuck doesn't want you to say anything let us know, I know guys like to keep secrets once they find something that works.

Hey, Nightdiver, found the FLP site with the cost of the Level 5 4L80E that Parish is running. It must be Parish's because it talks about his truck.

flp4l80e.jpg

Got a forced induction or nitrous truck that is making serious power? Is your truck in the 10s or even faster? Then our Level 5 4L80E is for you. Currently the fastest LS1 truck in the world(10.91 @ 122.71 mph) is running one of our transmissions. Making over 800 foot pounds of torque this truck is driven daily and raced almost daily as well with out a single transmission failure. If you want the best transmission possible for your truck look no further than our Level 5 4L80E. $3600

Doesn't say anything that's in it though.
