Re: X-cab Sy

Noticed your Avatar this morning. Cladding done and installed?

More pics man, more pics!

Cladding hangin on the truck still unpainted.:(
On hold trying to get the shop finished so the trucks have a place to park. The wife wants her garage back since its dumped snow almost every day the past 2 weeks.
Still can't find a local shop to paint, so may have to trailer it to Kalispell where my brother knows a couple of good painters.
Hope to have that done by early spring.

A very nice truck. If you make copies of the lower cab piece, and sell them, I would buy buy a set or 2.

Re: X-cab Sy

Well, it has been a long time since any updates other than a few "What have you done to your truck today" posts.
It took so long to find a painter that I decided to finish the shop and do some mechanical changes to the truck.
I've done a tranny shift kit & cooler. Ceramic coated Edelbrock headers with new stainless exhaust. MSD distributor & hot coil. Taylor wires from Hood Tuned. Flex-a-lite fan & variable controller. Ditched the under pullies for a Wynjammer supercharger. The bracketry is all in, just waiting on the blower which is back-ordered.
The painter takes her on Wednesday, which is pushing the deadline for Nats... but I'm trying.
Latest pics.

Re: X-cab Sy

The painter has it now. Some of the cladding have gotten brittle with mounts cracking and the rear bumper cover gaps side to side were a little huge for our taste, so he is waiting on a special two part plastic epoxy stuff that bonds to the cladding, and sands just like it. It acts just like the plastic, with just a bit of flex. It is, just my luck, back ordered. Should be in this week or next. He is so O.C.D. that it is taking a bit longer than most places, but he tells me that he wants this to last another 20 years. He is body gapping everything so it is a snug fit, with a tiny bevel at the top of the pieces so it will minimize the paint rub, since these trucks ride like lumber wagons( or at least mine does). He has been doing full resto's and custom projects for over 35 years, so I trust him.
The paint he wants to lay down is a new Sherwin Williams that takes a bit more to work with, (longer dry time & wet sanding between clears or something), but it is more durable. Which is gonna be great for a front bumper & rockers that get the abuse of the boulders that seem to pop out of nowhere in the springtime around here. They seem to take forever to sweep up after winter. She's not driven in the winter, just all of the roads are not cleaned up until well into June.
Oh, and I'm STILL (sorry, a bit of yelling) waiting on the supercharger blower.

I do hope to drive it complete sometime before the snow falls.
Maybe a trip to Seattle to see some friends.

Re: X-cab Sy

Update:
Still waiting on the epoxy. Should have it on Wednesday, maybe.
In the mean time , the painter tightened up the front bumper spacing.
IMG_1720-1.jpg

Is this too tight? About 3/16+. I know the bumper is off of the frame, and the front arch is on the body. maybe too close for potholes? Or the body doesn't move that much? He is going to trim the top of the bumper cover to equally space it to the grill across the front. I do like the snug look.
Thoughts?

Re: X-cab Sy

Should be ok as long as you have all of the support brackets and they are all tight. On mine, I haven't put the lower ones on yet that attach to the bottom of the frame and notice without them mine does move a bit.

Re: X-cab Sy

Update from the painter. He is filling more gaps and leveling all the skin. Doesn't look like factory GM pieces anymore. Should be ready for final primer by next week. Now I just need to fire up the $100 bill printing machine to pay for all of this.

Hope to have it done & snuggled in the shop by Christmas, maybe.
But with the snow falling, I will probably have to rent a trailer to get her home.

Re: X-cab Sy

are you painting the cladding on it, and then taking it off to paint hte vehicle?

The cladding comes off for primer & paint & clear. And the rest of the truck has decent paint. Just going to do a good buff before the finished cladding is bolted up. For 20 year old plastic, the factory pieces are just waiting to fall apart. This guy has strengthened every piece of cladding way beyond factory. And getting them to fit in place in a relaxed state so no part is stressed has taken time. But he is pleased with how things are now turning out. He just keeps telling me that he'll never take on a project like this again (or in some not so nice words:rant:).

Another teaser pic....

Primer is on. Going to put a coating on the back this weekend to hide the bright blue epoxy fixes. Maybe rubberized undercoating. Then the final sand before paint.

You should do like the old man in the movie MR 880. It took like 20 years to bust him.:rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::tup:

Had to look it up. Said he counterfeited a small number of 'one' dollar bills. WOW.
Looks like an interesting one. Gotta Check it out.
