Hey guys noobie here. So I jst purchased a 1992 ty with 148k miles. I didn't pay attention at first but now I'm noticing that it is not shifting into 4th. It is strong 1-3 but will not go into 4. Any ideas?

I thought you adjust the tv cable only if the car wont upshift oram I wrong? I could it be a solenoid?

Re: Won't shift into 4th gear

Check the adjustment of the torque converter lock-up switch at the brake pedal.

Also as stated above, check TV cable adjust... Wouldn't hurt to check.

Boostedsuv I'm new to these trucks. Can you be more specific as to where it is located and how to adjust it. And as far as the tv cable is it supposed to be tight or ??

Re: Won't shift into 4th gear

Under the dash by the brake pedal there is a momentary switch, top one is for the brake light, the bottom is for the torque convertor "lock up." Make sure that when the brake pedal is in it's nuetral position that the switch is making contact and is pressed in. (its a button like switch)

The TV cable should be adjusted according the above link. Easy to check...

Re: Won't shift into 4th gear

Ok so today i got under the dash to check the lock up switch and when I pressed in the brake the bottom switch came out. Then when I let the brake go it obviously went back in. I didn't hear a click or anything to where it would have activated. Is it supposed to? And another thing is that my shifter is slightly leaning to the left if that makes any sense. Also I was on a back road and I wanted to see what it could do so I took off and it went through 1-3 and as I pushed the pedal harder I Think it went into overdrive but I could be wrong. I also am not sure how to adjust the tv cable. I took it to Aamco transmissions and they said it wasnt going into overdrive or lock up and it could be that the valves are clogged. If thats possible?. Please help ive only had the ty for 5 days and I have to drive around town in drive. It does good but I need to figure out what's goin on with OD. THANKS IN ADVANCE

Re: Won't shift into 4th gear

If putting it in OD lets the engine free rev, putting it in D allows you to go then you have a busted sprag which is inside the transmission. Ask me how I know.

O yea, I won't stop by an Aamco to take a shit in their tiolet, let alone have them do any work for me.

Re: Won't shift into 4th gear

I got my Ty 10 years ago, but it was doing the exact same thing when I bought it. It has been MIA for the last 10 years, but I am just getting it back and dealing with the issues. I was told that my torque converter was totally shot. I have not had the trans cracked open yet, but I am going to in the very near future. I can post back with what I find out...

Re: Won't shift into 4th gear

Have you tried to push slightly forward on the shifter once in third gear, maybe that the shifter cable isn't adjusted properly. Can you feel the converter locking up?

Re: Won't shift into 4th gear

I have not tried pushing it forward yet but I will here when I take a brake from work. As far as if I feel the converter locking up I'm not sure what to look or feel for..??

Re: Won't shift into 4th gear

Ok so I took the ty in today to see about getting the tranny fix. The tech took it for a ride and walked back in and said uh its not shifting into fourth and walked in the back of the shop... Then the person up front said ok lets see here we will need to do a service and said it should be $2,100. Nothing else was said. I grabbed my keys and said F you and walked out. They were nice on the phone but for them throw out that price with no explanation I wasnt having it. Anyways I took it to a mechanic and he put it on a scanner and said a valve body cup plug could possibly be missing so its not building pressure in 4th. Any ideas

Re: Won't shift into 4th gear

To summarise:

Not going into 4th in OD:

broken sprag
missing valve body cup plug
blocked valve
broken torque converter
TC lockup switch
TV cable adjustment

Have you tightened up your shifter bracket on the trans? 2 bolts and it makes a tonne of difference. You said it was leaning. It shouldn't be bent.

TCC solenoid won't engage in neutral - can't remember off the top of my head but it needs to be running. The value for TCC lockup will be in the ECM.

What scanner did the guy connect it to?

Sounds like no TC lockup. You'd prob have other issues if the convertor blew up.

Search for TC lockup and shift points on here so you can anticipate the RPM and confirm it's not locking although it sounds like you're already there.

I think there is a way to do manual TC lockup using a switch. You could try that otherwise you may need to get someone to look at it.
