Whining 80e

So as some may know, I have my 80e working now. When I put it in to gear, you hear this awful whine coming from the pump/converter area. Now it kind of sounds like a bad power steering pump, not the screeching sound you hear when you turn the wheel but when its sitting there just whining. Any thoughts?

Mine did that right before it failed. Is it a new install or old?

I thought it was the pump when I rebuilt it so I just replaced the pump gears. But I didn't see anything apprecable when I inspected it.

I used to be a millwright so I thought I'd be able to see some wear if that was the issue but the pump halves were flat and I didn't see anything. I rebuilt the whole thing and didn't see anything interesting except a failed/lost a thrust washer in the pinion. Bad power valve??

Not that I know a ton about trannies. Just thought I'd share.

I've read on new install it could be the TC back spacing.

my 700r had a whine when in gear and it ended up being the bearings in the converter. swapped to new converter and went away.

Trans is from the junk yard. It goes through all gears but shift is weak and it does lock up. I noticed the noise is really loud at a stop but goes away when you start driving. What should the "backspacing" be? Also, anyone know how much clearance there should be between the converter and the flywheel before bolting it up?

You want about 1/16"-1/8" before you bolt convertor, if its more than you should install spacers.

Sounds pump related to me, you sure you got the flats indexed correctly?

I had about 3/16" I thought it should have been more, hmm. If you mean by flats, the flat parts of the TC hub, I am thinking they went in right but I suppose I could be wrong. I got it out tonight and will take the converter down to the shop tomorrow. I am contemplating taking the trans to a shop as well. I want to open the 80 up but I feel like I really don't have the energy at this point and am just ready to roll.

Is it odd to have a cast pump? I thought pumps were always aluminum?

I personally would throw new clutches in it and seals. $100 in parts now would probably let the trans survive 50k miles of your abuse later.

The 80e is actually fairly easy to rebuild IMO.

For flats yes, the 80e has flats where our 700's have notches. Just making sure you didn't stuff the pump back into itself which could cause the whine. Just my thought anyways.

Well I removed the converter and dropped it off this morning. This afternoon I took the pump out and apart. Seems fine to me but am going to have a guy look at it tomorrow. I also stuck my toes in the water and pulled out the first clutch pack to see them out of curiosity. Well, they are pretty dark. This lead to entire tear down of the 80e. So far seems way easier than the 700 but I guess I will really find out tomorrow when the rebuild kit gets here.

I wouldnt trust a junk yard trans with out a full rebuild. You'll be much happier in the end and you know you will be able to trust it.

Mine makes a little noise sometimes too, my line of thinking (since its a Blake unit) is go or blow bitch!

What year 80e is it? If its the early style (cooler lines close together towards front) make sure it has the 38 element intermediate sprag and not the 16 elemnt.

Its also a good idea to upgrade to the bonded steel pistons in the direct and forward drum from the aluminum pistons.

And there are two different 2/4 bands, get the wider one of the two (later model i believe).

Soooo. I rebuilt the 80e and put it all back together Saturday. No luck, I had the converter c hecked out while it was out and he said it looked fine but could have lied I suppose. The noise is still there though and he gave me a stock converter to try out and see if the noise goes away. If it goes away and he opens the converter and says nothing is wrong again I will be looking at a different converter.

Well the verdict is in, the converter is a cum dumpster. I put a stock converter in which btw, is friggin HUGE! Truck feels real good with but wont spool the turbo. The shift kit I did on the 80e is retarded, kicks the rear side ways on the 1/2 and gives a mean chirp on the 2/3. All in all I say I did a good job on the trans rebuild. Now tomorrow I take the converter down and either get a good one or my money back I hope.

Im pretty sure it is bearings. I found what looked like a piece of a needle bearing in the pump when I took it apart. The pump actually looked beautiful inside. I wont know anything on the converter until Monday.
