What all controls reverse?

I have a problem here that is getting old real quick. I built this POS tranny, first one Ive ever had problems with, the reverse doesnt work. I had the pan and valve body off a few weeks ago to try and figure it out. Everything seemed ok except that a check ball in the rear was missing (installed INTO the the case). If you put it in R, you can feel it obviously goes into gear, even rolls back a bit, then stops. If you give it gas it does nothing but when you let off, it rolls back a little morethen stops again??? :dunno: If someone can point me in the right direction or give me something to look for Ild apprecaite it. Thanks in advance.

the check ball in the rear of the case I normally leave out anyway, thats not your problem. I suspect a leak. do a pressure test with it and see if the pressure drops when you select "R".

The Reverse gear uses the low and reverse clutches and the rev input clutches when selecting"R" and if you stil have a normal 1st gear then that leaves only the rev input clutches to blame. I suspect thats where your problem lies if you see a drop in pressure. if you dont have a press drop then I suspect a VB issue somehow.

If the pressure dropped, wouldnt it not engage? If its sitting on a hill, facing forwards, it wont roll backwards once in R. I shouldve mentioned that sorry. Maybe ill just build another one. This sucks.

Remember when you had that pressure regulator lineup fall out? It's very possible you already burnt the clutches during that period. It doesn't take much. That check ball you talked about is a cushioning ball for low. It's very possible the way it's acting that you've got the low roller clutch in backwards or it's defective. This will show as fine pressure but just doesn't go anywhere. Just because you feel it engage reverse doesn't mean pressure was boosted. There is a lip on the pump that many have accidently seated the snap ring into. A few miles down the road, the ring pops out along with all the valves and spring. Your gonna have to bite the bullet and pull the trans back out, get a gasket kit and see what you did wrong and inspect every part.
