Wastegate?

I was just wondering....What size the factory wastegate on the Typhoons is. I was also wondering whether it was an external or an internal wastegate. I was thinking about putting an aftermarket external wastegate on after i put the exhaust and everything on to try prevent boostcreap.

Or is the wastegate internal and i should just wait until I have to put a new turbo on and do it then.
Any recommendations on external wastegates.

Thanks for the help guys.

stock is a small internal.

it would not hurt to go external with stock turbo.

the progate is what people like to use.
some have been using the tial 35 also. (smaller)

ON the stock turbo you should be able to get solid boost control with the internal.

Maybe a controller upgrade or something.

You own a Syclone right ?

Did you ever drive it when it was stock ?

Egads.... Stock WG setup sometimes works well for people, sometimes it never works right.

I'd recommend going external if you are set of keeping the stock turbo. While I took the time to sort out all the boost control issues I had, it was nowhere near worth the time and hassle just to get decent boost control with the stock internal. If you are strapped for cash or just like internal wastegates I'd recommend performing a search here and in the syty.org archives to read up on the many things people have tried with success to get good boost control.

My current turbo has the PTE internal WG setup and it works flawlessly. Much better setup than stock. I'd even go so far to say it works on par with many external WG setups.

I wish I had an old datamaster file around. I got solid "rock solid" boost control on the stock turbo all the way up to 20lbs.

I guess my truck was an odd ball or something. Im just saying the port and actuator are capable of it if in good codition.

Are you guys trying to refer to ramp rate or hold.

The reason I am asking about the wastegate is because i am going to be putting all new exhaust on and everything. I wasn to try to keep boostcreap to a minimum.
I also want to truck to hold the boost, and not drop off so much between shifts. Why does it seem to drop off a little between shifts, or sometimes when I am excelerating? But other times when I have it to the floor it doesn't drop off at all?

do i have to take the turbo off, and weld the intergal wastegate shut....and do i have to buy a new manifold, with an adaptor for the external welded on, or can i just use the stock one.
thanks for the help.

that article on the archive helped out alot as far a explaining things to me better. Thanks alot.
Now my next ? is. After i put in the new external wastegate, and the old wastegate is wired shut like they recommend. What do they mean by being able to control boost.

Does this mean that i can get a boost control and mount it somewhere on the inside of the truck and give it a little turn when i want to run a little more boost or less boost.

How does having an external wastegate allow you to regulate the amount of boost that you can run? I am a little new to the turbo world, so i am not exactly clear on what they mean by that.

So if i want to run more boost, I need to get a 3Bar computer chip, and then just make an adjustment to the wastegate.

the external will control your boost.
now if you want easy to change boost from the cab, get a blitz sbcid with the external.

the wastegate regulates the ammount of air that the turbo gets.
the more air, the more boost.
the less air, the less boost.
the wastegate is adjustable with springs...
if you have a 15psi spring, you will get 15psi.

also, you dont really need to wire the wastegate shut. that looks ugly.
you can weld the flapper that the arm off the wastegate controls.
with that closed so no air can come out.

anytime your boost is getting near the set ammount, the wastegate will open, allowing air to escape, thus controlling the boost.

think of it as a flood gate.
you can only put so much in a canal before it starts to overfill, then you release some watter (exhaust) to keep it in check.
HTH

ps. yeah, a 3bar map sensor AND a 3BAR CHIP will allow your ecm to read the extra boost and fuel for it accordingly.
