Vortec Motor

There is one complete at a local junk yard for $750. It came out of a 1995 Jimmy. How do I know if it has the right heads and everything? Where are the casting numbers? Is it better to buy the whole engine and everything or just the heads? I'm not for sure going to get it just thought I came across a good deal for a future project. What do you all think?

1995 is not new enough to have the TRUE vortec heads. In 1995 it should have the L35 heads. which are better than stock and do bolt directly on but are not the true last gen Vortec.

What do you mean by true Vortecs? What is the difference between a Vortec head and a stock head? What makes them better? What about the price? is $750 too much for the whole motor? Thanks for the speedy responce jwaller!

well, I wont beat around the bush the stock heads are junk...they dont flow well and they are very prone to detonation..the engineers got it right by the 3rd generation and the last set of 4.3 heads are turely awesome. 96 and up is the best you can get...but they require some work to get them to fit correctly...this 95 motor has the 2 gen design called L35 which is much better in every respect to stock and there are lots of guys running them..I ran them for a while and my sy even has them on there but they dont begin to compar to the 96 and up vortec....the 96 and up has a different chamber desgin as well as all the runners intake and exhaust are totally different and much better

The vortec motor has the valve covers that say vortec. Am I right in thinking that? I just got one and I do not know if I am going to use it or not. I think it came out of a '96.

This is an L35

It says Vortec all over it,but it's not a true Vortec. Those were made from 96-up. I think $750 is way too much for an L35,I've seen "real" Vortecs go for $150 ( not running)

One question here. You have to use different valve cover for the '96 and up, right? What about with the L35s? Do they use the the same valve cover as stock?

TIA

you can put any valev cover on any head..they all interchange..and the vortec heads will only have 4 bolts on each side that hold the intake down..and they will also be missing the EGR passage....the intake runners will also be much larger than stock or L35.
