vibration / rims (long)

Went to local big truck repair shop to get propshaft rebuilt. Told the guy behind counter what was going on. Said guy told me approx. $200, better than new, guaranteed. But refused to do anything until I jacked up the Typhoon and measured the circumference of all four tires. He said that if there is more than 1/2" difference between the smallest and largest tire, this will cause vibration because of the viscous gear in t-case. Previous owner decided that ARE 5- stars were a better choice than original rims. It wasn't until then that it hit me, the front tires bulge at the sidewalls, rears don't. Seems that there are 7" on front and 8" on rear, changing the circumference. So after all of this typing, what I need to know is what spacing for the front rims do I need. Going to use same size all around with 1.25" spacers in rear. And even if the vibration goes away, still going to have propshaft rebuilt. Honesty will get my money.

the guy is right about the tire diameter. this can cause alot of problems, i have seen it alot. at first i thought it was bullshit till i worked on 2 corvettes that had rearend noise. yep, it was because the tires were not the same diameter. also make sure when they are balanced that the spacers they use to do it fit the rim correctly. i have had some problems there also. good luck.

a good way to test tire rolling diameter is to mark the ground and mark the tire with chalk. Roll the truck forward one(or several) rotations and see if the front/rear wheels are rotating at the same rate.

Typical fix is to up the pressure in the fronts and lower the rears to even out the rolling diameter

Mearure the tires before spending $. My opinion, you won't find a difference due to rim width. Circumference is controled by the length of the steel belt in the tire and basically can't be changed.

NASCAR guys used to stetch bias tires to get stager. Can't do that with a radial.

Thanks all. Found numbers I needed at sytyarchives.com/howto/wheel_tech.php :D Front wheels 41mm offset, rears are 13mm.
