So I'm tooling around town, had to pick up some beer, kitty litter, and some threaded rod (strange combination of things, I suppose) and I roll up to one of my favorite playgrounds - a light 3 lanes across where the far right lane ends a few hundred feet up. This one is by the car wash, so all the dudes drying cars stand at attention to see how things are going to play out.
I roll up in the middle lane. Subaru wagon on the left, nothing on the right. No one takes the far right lane unless they're sure they can get ahead of whatever is sitting at the light. Otherwise you're screwed into merging with people who know you're only over there to cut them off. Makes for a nice clusterf*ck. Anyhow, sitting there and I hear a rumbling next to me. I look over and it's an older blue extended cab S10. Huh. He didn't look like he was set up for racing - still had big 4x4 type wheels and tires on it, maybe a little lift too. He had his own Earnhardt memorial going on all over his back window. He wouldn't look over, but I knew what he was up to.
I couldn't see the opposing light, so I didn't know when mine was turning green. I started to spool, he started to roll into the light. Turned green and there was a lot of squealing - everyone at the car wash looked to see what was going on. I don't think the squealing was me - it got a little crooked on me, but otherwise took off okay. I had him by 4-5 lengths to 60 where I let up. He tried to catch me, but by that time I had caught up to traffic and cut a path that he couldn't duplicate.
Not real exciting, but hearing the V8 rumble from that little S10 I thought there might be trouble.
