understanding the tranny

When my car is in drive, (somewhere between 50-80 mph) and the gas is on, the rpms range where they should but, when I let off the gas, still doing 50-80 mph the rpms drop down to 1000 rpms and it coasts until I add gas then it goes back up where it belongs.

This does not happen in overdrive, the rpms rise and fall with speed.

I checked the converter==tapped the brake and watched the rpms.

If it is in drive at 50-80 and rpms drop 1000 I would say the over run clutches are gone.

Same thing happened in my old tranny although it has not been opened up yet thats what I was told it probably was as well.
