OK guys I'm new to this forum and have a question that I'm pretty sure can be answered fairly easily by you Sy/Ty gurus.

My son's 93 Ty is in need of a new transmission. With the current state of the economy and it's uncertainty, I've decided that the most practical way to get this truck back on the road is to find a good used tranny. My son already has a DD, so the Ty is going to be his second vehicle.

My question is can I use a 700R out of a late model Camaro/Firebird or some other vehicle or is the Ty trans, Ty specific? I was told by a friend that if I install a used tranny that it would have to be out of a Sy or Ty. He told me that the trans used in Sy/Ty's are beefier and shifts harder.

Can anyone verify? And if the tranny is interchangeable, what are the best donor vehicles to get the trans from?

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I wanted to explain everything as best I can.

Yes you could put a tranny from a camaro/firebird in to a ty. but it will not last. Sy/ty tranny's have a different valve body and can handle more abuse than another 700r4 will.It would be a quick fix,but it won't last long. There's a few posting on the forumns about the tranny's in the sy/ty's. Do a quick search on it.There's been a couple tranny's for sale, if your not in a hurry wait till one comes up for sale.

Do yourself a huge favor,wait and save a little cash if you can and rebuild yours,it will make your life way easier in the future!

You'd need to swap output shafts and valve bodies at the least, and even then you wouldn't end up with the same thing.

Output shaft swap involves tearing the trans apart entirely, at which point it kinda begs the question of why you wouldn't rebuild what you had.

I dont know, I have yet to see something different form syty 700 to regular 700 besides the valve body. What I mean is in terms of quality. The internals in the syty trans are not beefed up from what I have seen. IMO, it could last just fine just will not perform the same. Pump is a little different as well in that we have a bigger boost valve.

i have a tranny out of my sy i need to sell. ran great but moving up to a slightly beefier tranny, 4l80e pm me if interested

Interesting topic!

I have torn my 700R4 apart and I see the that I dont have a LHM model for my Syclone and that It
has a 2-4 pistone with a diameter of approx 45mm. The syclone should be 58 approx.

And now I wanna rebuild it for my Syclone. So what should I do and change?
