Ty vs GTP - bad idea

heading home the other night on one of our major highways, I-4.

doing the usual 75mph in the 55mph zone as EVERYONE else does....i was in the center lane...

i see headlights coming up on me quick.... now, i dont race the ty, but when the car pulled up next to me and i saw it was a GTP, i figured i could play around a little...

so i gave it a little gas, then punched it.... the GTP sorta speed up with me, i let off at around 95mph or so...again, i dont beat on the ty, its just a driver...

GTP didnt come back up next to me, but roll in behind me...ok.. wtf...


then i see him flash me and a tiny set of red and blue light up in the upper driver side of the windshield.

dammit, i just tried to race a cop.... DOH!


i really dont need a ticket.....


pulled over.... cop gets out, full uniform... passenger side, and firmly tells me to get out of the truck and go to the front of his car.


shiiiittt... not good, cause im probably gonna get cuffed.


typical "how ya doin...... can i see your license please..."

as im pulling the license out, he glances at the truck and says..

"kickass truck.... dont be stupid like that again and lets drive a little slower..."


uh..


asks me if i any suspensions or warrents... tell him no and he hands back the license....


"yeah, just be safe out here and dont speed like that..... not a good idea late at night...... take it easy, have a good night...."


what? wait...... im off, no ticket? sweeeeeeet.


as hes walking back to his car... i yell for him to wait....

comes walking back...


asked him about the GTP... what he had in it... said it was stock...

i said i knew better, and asked if he had the bottle or if they turned up the boost...


he assured me it was all stock and pointed that there was nothing in the car and it was not a cruiser and used for other activities... (probably a siezed drug car converted to undercover unit)

he laughed and told me to get on my way home.... i pull back out into traffic with him and see that a dealer tag was still on the car....jeeze..nice...




did i learn my lesson?


sure did...until the moment he got off at the next exit which i proceed to floor it back up to 85mph the rest of the way home....

a friend of mines girlfriend had a GTP. It was pretty damn quick and it was bone stock. Thing really had a charge from about 40-100, off the line it was a little wanting. wish i had my sy back then, nice to see a stock GTP vs stock Sy. Anyone out there have a good race story about a GTP that doesn't involve a cop :lol:

My dad has a GTP that runs 13.9 in the 1/4. Its pretty damn awsome, but like you said off the line they could use some help (no traction).

Last year I took my L to Atco and on the way in I noticed a GTP with Hoosiers on the Front wheels ( :-? still looks sily to me). Anyway, got to talking to him and he had a boost pulley, headers & exhaust, air filter, chip, and I believe roller rockers on an otherwise stock engine and trans. Proceeded to run 13.0's/13.10's at around 102. For a front driver, I was relatively impressed. ::brews::

i was hoping the NOS question would lead into him telling me the cars that DID have nitrous....

he seemed kinda in a hurry...so it was short and sweet...

technically, if i launch with maybe 3-5psi i wont spin the tires, and as long as i let off before i go over the speed limit, what can they do? is there a law against taking off fast? can't they only get you in you spin the tires?

and yes i will definitely have the video camera out for that one hahaha

Cool story Adam. I raced a cop once, but he was a friend.

Sothis....I got pulled over one night in Savannah for launching at a light. Did the same thing you mentioned....launched to speed limit and got out of it. Cop nails me and threathens to ticket me for reckless driving and (I quote) excessive acceleration. I try not to laugh, he throws a warning in my face, and off I go. Thought about launching away from him, but I'm not a moron.

Moral.....check with a local cop friend and see if that would be considered illegal. I won't do it on Southside Savannah again, but elsewhere.....

If he throws the lights on, you could always keep going. :wink:

hahaha good call mchael, i might be able to get away with it in LA somewhere, but where i live, cops give tickets for not using a turn signal in grocery store parking lots. so im sure theyd manage to come up with some kinda bullshit. still be funny as hell to get on video.

I will be willing to race anyone that wants to at the east coast event or nats. I have a 98 gtp. I will lose but I will race you none the less. The best time stock I have got is 14.472. So they are not all that quick. I will be a little faster now but not sure how much. I am not using NOS either. Willie

I dont think a little tirespin in illegial, i think if your burning the shit out of the street or your rear end slides out your in for it.... I got pulled over after burning out in the middle of the street one day, cop was right behind me :roll: ... ne ways i proceeded to tell him that it was the idle, and the roughness was spinning my tires... he bought it

Depends on the situation, launch in front of a cop and chirp your tires, I'm gonna put my money down on you're getting pulled over for "Reckless Driving". Accelerate quickly and staying at or under the limit, you get the good ol' evil eye and little bit of tailing and waiting for you to f'up (if they have no other concerns).

As for the tire chirping, saw it on the news. Cops busted up some street races and some kid in a Camaro watching from a parking lot decided it was time to leave, chirped his tires leaving the lot, got a ticket for R.D. and his excuse was he had stick and accidently pop his clutch. Cop wasn't buying it.

if christian ever reads this post... asked him what happened to him and his truck when he chirped the tires in front of a cop pulling out on a highway when he had no propshaft....not on purpose, just got some spin going around the corner.... he spent the night in jail and had the sy impounded.... the cop called him on trying to "street race".

Ask E-RUE about doing this. When I went to my first NATS in Great Bend KS, I heard about him doing just that. It was night time and a cop pulled up beside him at a light. Figures "Ah, what the hell..." Looks over at the cop, revs the ty a little and launches across the intersection. He got off it before he exceeded the 35 MPH speed limit. Cop immediately lights him up and pulls him over. Asks "How did you take off like that without spinning your tires?" :lol: He got a warning and was free to go.

My freind had a 4 cylinder mustang w/standard (it did 0-60 in about 10.5 secs) In front of a cop, he hoped on it in 1st gear 0-30 mph in 35mph zone and let off. A cop wrote him up a ticket for excessive acceleration.

My same friend slightly squeal his tires on a damp day at stop sign in front of cop (Modifed 5.0 Mustang) Cop pulled him over and decided write him spinning the tires ticket. My friend was pissed off, as he got ready to take off he yelled out the window something along line of "spinning the tires?, I will show you spinning the tires" and left 2 gears of rubber. A driving to endanger ticket came in the mail a few days later.

Moral of the story, don't f- with the cops even when you think that you have lawful ground to stand on. If you go out of the way to piss them off, they will go out of their way to bust you.

I had a GTP it was real quick, I was impressed. It was stock with a K&N. I ran it against my ty but it was no race from the dead stop. Even with the traction control on, it would bog down the car and the ty would be gone. Then with the traction control off it would just spin the tires. My cousin that has a mustang drove the GTP he couldn't lauch my ty right. We raced from 30 mph role and I couldn't just leave him like I would have liked to but I kept pulling on him we raced up to 110. Then we raced the GTP against his mustang and he beat me but it was closer the the GTP and my TY. I put new tires on it about a month later. We raced the GTP and the mustang again and with the traction control on he beat me by a car link. Then I ran him with the traction control off I beat him by a half car link. So the tires made a big difference. With the new tires I didn't get much tire spin at all. His mustang was basically stock for the most part. After my warranty ran out on the GTP it was in the shop all the time, for 4 months straight I had to make 300.00 car payments plus over 300.00 getting it fixed and every month it was something different wrong. So it had TO GO. Since I ran my ty against my GTP I can't get my cousin to race the mustang against my TY. Until that day he talked shiiiii about beating me but now I can't get him to run me.....WHY IS THAT?????

Fuck what a dumb move that was. I thought for some dumb reason that he was launching because of the old man and his family in the station wagon next to us.

Nooooooo...He's launching because we are all out of towners in a small hick town that barely wants us there anyway...and there's a cop behind the station wagon that I didn't see (I was drunk and could barely see straight)

So, E does a full out 7lb launch and shuts it down right at 35mph...no tire squeak no spinning. Sure enough he got lit up right away. He pulls over to the parking lot and cop takes his info. Remember back then E had long dread locks...see comment above about the town.

Eventually I got out of the truck to smoke a ciggy and sport my high & tight military haircut. So the cop saw me. We ended up bullshitting about the truck after the cop gave E a lecture on valid insurance cards.

Long, long ago, when all my truck had was headers (on the V6), & all Dad's GTP had was a 180 stat we ran em. I took him to 70, then he walked me.


This story reminds me of another one......Long time ago, when my truck ran ( its been a year now) & I was on Academy Blvrd., the main drag in town. Every dumbass ricer raced there. Well this one night, I was going north on Academy, & I was in the middle of 3 lanes. I catch a light, & next to me on the left is an Eclipse, & to the right a black GTP, with really dark windows. Something seemed funny about the car. I told my passanger to look at the 2 little antennes on the truck lid, & I told him how I thought it was a cop. So the light goes green, the Eclipse goes for it, & I baby it through the intersection. Soon the cop takes my lane, then gets right on the Eclipse's ass, & tail gates him for about a block, then lights emm up. It had lights in the visor, & lights where the fog lamps used to be. The rear tail lights blinked & all. Later I met the guy who modifyed the car. I was for the El Paso County Sheriffs department. Only thing done to it was the lights, no engine mods.


One other time I saw a GTP cop car was when I went to Wyoming, to visit WyoTech, & the trans went out on our truck. We pulled over just out side Littelton. The first of 4 cop cars to show was a GTP. Four cars showed up because we were also traveling with a bas, so the cops freeked out. But anyway the GTP was a really beiutiful Maroon, but the other cops would'nt tell us what engine mods it had.


GTPs are fun to drive. The torque steer is cool. Trans is really week.
