TV Cable Strikes Again...

Does anyone know where I can buy a new TV cable? Im starting to realise that Its the source of my transmissions problems.... I thought it was something internal but im starting to think that might not be the case....

My tv cable came loose (out of adjustment) and now my truck actually shifts down into 1st gear when I stop... which it never did when the TV cable was last adjusted, and when I bought the car... However it still takes high rpms to get it to shift into the next gear... however, since the tv cable is now loose, it does that with every gear...... When it was tight i had no problems with any gear, but when I stopped the truck wouldnt shift down into 1st gear... 1st gear ALWAYS needed high rpms to coax it into the next gear. When the tv cable was tight, it would only shift into 1st when I floored the gas at a stop... now that the cable is loose it shifts into 1st every time im at a stop, but now it doesnt shift up without some flooring of the gas pedal, and thats the same for every gear...

I'm guessing to start with a new cable... has anyone else had a problem like this? Also, how do I tighten the cable up again? I have to press the button and pull it to the drivers or passengers side?

Anyone Know Where Can I Purchase A New Cable? And How Much?

Sounds like the ratchet/adjusting portion of your cable is worn out and won't hold its setting.
Press the "D" shaped button, pull the sheathing away from the throttle and release the button. Then get in and SLOWLY put your foot to the floor. You'll hear the ratchet click a few times as it adjusts.
But, like you already mentioned it sound like it's worn out.

moved to drivetrain tech.

And always try readjusting it before replacing it.
They can be finicky to get just right
But if it is way out of adjustment it can do some damage so use caution.

so wait, move the black sheathing... not the actual metal "wire" thats connected to the the throttle? hmm... thats prolly where I screwed up... Eric already adjusted it for me once... I think it came loose with a boost launch :lol:

After he adjusted it.. the truck still wouldnt go into 1st gear unless I floored it from a stop... otherwise from a stop it would be in a higher gear...and it would take me forever to get rolling...

Now that the cable is out of adjustment, it always goes into 1st gear when I stop... but then it doesnt wanna shift out of it until 4,500-5,000 rpm... so I'm not driving it until I adjust the cable... theres a lot of play with the cable, its very loose...


...10 bucks sounds good to me if it's a legit part, and not a cheap aftermarket replacement... is there a link?

Or should I contact prime gears for a a replacement (does george sell em?)

I swear I remember waller or someone saying that it was discontinued from gm . Maybe that was something else ..

edit : i found the thread . Sorry, it was about the throttle cable.

Correct. Move the sheathing back. Not the cable. The cable should be loose when the throttle is released (idle), fairly taught when you go WOT.

Make sure to do it right. There isn't really a TV "adjustment" per se. It's either correctly adjusted, or out of adjustment. There is ONE position that is correct. The one that pulls the wire taut at WOT, which is what you'll get if your cable is good and you follow the procedure in the Video that Merk posted above.

If your TV is correctly adjusted and you have other shifting problems, they may lie in the transmission governor and/or valve body. Or you could have a non-stock torque converter mismatched with a stock calibrated transmission. If you try to mask those problems by mis-adjusting the TV on purpose, you can end up smoking your transmission, so be careful.

yes i adjusted it per the video.. and it was a bit better.. but the ratcheting could just be worn out.

FYI stock syty TV cable is 56" long. Good luck finding one. GM doesn't make these anymore. If you get the right one let me know. The last time I tried to order one, they sent me one that had the wrong end on it and was 14" too short.

Know what? Maybe that might be the problem, I remember dave telling me when I bought the truck that the converter was different... I wonder if Dynotech compensated for that with the rebuild.... :dunno:

I rmember you posting about having some of these... you said they were longer and had the correct fittings... have any more? Just in case I need one?

Yep. The ones I do are a manual adjustment but won't go bad like the stock arrangement does. Instead of ridges to "catch", it has threads that g all the way around.
