Ok question #1. With your throttle at WOT can you pull the TV cable out any more past that position?

#2 have you ever done A test with the pressure gauge?

Re: TV cable questions

Mine was down shifting fine from 1st to 2nd. It does not shift hard at all & it is in 3 gear about 35-40 mph & OD at about 45mph. I get on it & seems to be fine. IM getting A new TV hopefully tomorrow.

NO. And you shouldn't be able to, either. A correctly 'set' TV cable length has the cable fully extended at WOT

#2 have you ever done A test with the pressure gauge?

Many times. If you really want to know for sure what the TV system is doing, the best way to know is to put a gauge on it. And run the tests. Yes, the pressure is different, for the same TV, depending on Manual Valve position. Reverse being almost 3X higher, L1 and L2 somewhat higher.

Much of what I've learned about the importance and effect of properly functioning and set TV linkage I got from the people at BowTieOverdrives. Where that link goes to. I installed a Bowtieoverdrive trans in my neighbor's Camaro years ago. They insist on the installer running that check-list, and reporting back the pressures, before they 'approve' your installation, and begin your warranty.

I had a lot of difficulty getting the carb linkage to cooperate. I called the guy about 5 times in a single morning. I got huffy with him, and said "it's good enough"... He replied "NO it's NOT! Get back out there and work on it until you get a 2-1 downshift at low speed, like I told you you need". He was right, I was wrong. They are very good people to work with. But they only assist their own transmission customers. They are not a general repair shop.

Re: TV cable questions

OPPSS.. lol.. I will try that tues. when I get the new cable.

That's a neat trick. I've never known a trans can downshift from Lo.

Here's the test:

  • Take off from a stop at minimum throttle.
  • Let the 1-2 occur.
  • Immediately after the 1-2, Floor It.
The trans MUST downshift back into First.
  • If it does, your TV set-up is fine. (In that the pressures are adequate to not burn-up the trans).
  • If it does not, the TV is not properly set. Work on it.

This 2-1 'low speed' test is my primary test for 'checking' the TV setting. It was taught to me by the tech at Bowtie Overdrive when I did the Camaro. It's by far the most indicative of whether it's correct or not, and easy to 'run'. Use it.
