Trying to find out if my Torque Converter is stock...

I noticed that I have no Flywheel cover on this truck. The last three trucks I've bought were also like this because the drivetrain was pulled at some point. So I'm thinking that it's the same scenario with Syclone. The torque converter is red, and has "7's" marked on the outer edges around the entire thing.

I'd like to find out if this is stock or not.

Also, what flywheel cover should I get?

I don't really want to keep that off, but is it safe to? This will be a daily driver for the most part. But I take care of my vehicles and won't be driving this in heavy rain or bad weather (have another car for that). I'm basically just going to be driving it to and from work 5 days a week (25miles round trip). Still...this missing cover bugs me.

The stock torque converter is not red, so your is not an untouched original.

Good to know. I've found out that this truck has quite a bit of aftermarket parts on it. The turbo is not stock either. I just put a new stock one one and it's much smaller on the cold side. I think it also has a Walbro pump in the tank (sounds louder, like my Buicks).

I would like to figure out what converter this is...without taking things a part. The ONLY numbers I could see were the 7's all over the outer circumference.

Not positive, but I believe Yank converters are red

My TC is light green. I don't know if it is OEM (maybe someone else can chime in on this) but in case you need it, the part number stamped on my flywheel cover is 15644627.

Sorry to hijack thread, but would like to know what mine is. It's white with 2800 written on it with a marker.

Sounds like you may have a Hughes like mine:

"3K stall TC w/lock up part #HP2230L $412.75 on 10/03 through paceparts.com list price is $956.37. The mounting pads on this TC need to be drilled with a 7/16" drill to accept three grade eight 7/16" X 14 bolts one inch long. The nut goes the motor side and gets 262 (red) LocTite."

If you have a "ring" welded to the back of the converter that holds it to the flexplate, that's probably what it is. Don't recall seeing any numbers stamped on mine anywhere.

With regards to the TC inspection cover, I have a "modified" one on my truck. I have a partial cover that I cut two thirds off of. I kept the side that holds the tab that supports the transmission lines so that they aren't just dangling under the truck. Some people don't run them because it may or may not, help the transmission run a little cooler. Another reason to not run the cover is so that you can inspect the torque converter with having to take the cover off (duh). Which may not seem like a big deal however, you have to remove the propshaft to take the cover off IIRC. I haven't been stock in that area for over ten years so my memory might be a little rusty :p.

Re: Trying to find out if my Torque Converter is stock...

Just a follow up on this post. Turns out that I'm pretty stupid! When I was busy working on putting this truck together I noticed the color red somewhere under there and then I started reading posts about TC's. Well, the trans pan is RED, not my TC. The TC is grey and has X's all around it. So I'm pretty sure it's stock? But, why is the pan red? I keep finding little things that have been upgraded on this truck so I would'nt be surprised if something has been done to the trans, after all, my TC cover is missing.

Anyway, sorry for my lack of brains.
