transmission problems

My Ty has 15K on a "rebuilt transmission" from the prevoius owner. I recently thought I had an exhaust leak, psst, psst, psst. I get under the truck and find no leaks but I hear a hissing/psst...ing sound from the converter area. I take her out for a spin and massive slip in the 1-2 shift under acceleration. She's parked in my garage now and just waiting for me to get to her and pull the trans.

Any ideas of what can cause such a sound from the transmission?

Consequently, my Ty's gonna be in the garage out of service for some time:tdown: I've got too much going on right now to tend to her.

Thanks everyone for the help:tup:

Re: transmission problems

definalty not TV cable. I checked the adjustment and it's perfect. I have a loud hissing that sounds like an exhaust leak but it's coming from teh torque converter:( I have no idea of what that sound is? Definatley not an exhaust leak and it is in the transmission:(

Re: transmission problems

Nothing looks abnormal with the inspection cover pulled.

Anyone have any ideas of what is up with my transmission:barf:

Re: transmission problems

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like the front pump to me. I put a tranny in and didn't seat the torque converter well and it blew the front pump and made that tick, tick, tick sound when running and it wouldn't shift right and finally it just died out on me and refused to move.

You may not have this problem but from the sound of it that is the winner.

Did this ruin your tranny or did you just need a new pump? The only reason I ask is I just had a used built 700r4 installed with a 9/11 2800 stall and thought I heard a similar sound from under my truck, like a exhaust leak sound.

Re: transmission problems

As far as the conveter, I put a 2800 stall in it & it was seated properly when I put it in...that was 5 years ago. I"ve put 15K miles on her in that time. My ty has always shifted correclty..shifts nice and firm in all gears. I never had a problem with it till recently. I drove her to work one day and on the way home I heard this sound that I thought was an exhaust leak. I have my cat cut off and have a straight pipe with a band clamp holding the pipe in place. I fix what I though was an exhaust leak. Took her out for a spin & I could still hear the leak. When I launched the truck, it slipped really bad when it shifted into second gear. I drove her home and put her in the garage. Now, she sit's in my garage. I don't think it ruined my transmission. I only felt it slip once. Howver, I have not touched my TY since this happened.

From the sounds of it, it sure sounds like my pump is gone:( Which type of pump is in our stock syty transmissions? Which master rebuild kit is best for our transmissions? I'm going to purchase the best kit that will withstand the most hp...with in reason for a stock transmission.

That bad part is my Ty is next in line for repairs. I need to do some upgrade/repairs to my 2003 F350 6 liter...EGR delete, new oil cooler and coolant filtration system. I have all the parts & just wating on my vacation to kick in to work on my truck:( SOME VACATION:D Once I finsh updating my big truck, I'm gonna pull the trans out and start working on my TY:)

Re: transmission problems

So, what is going to be my best master rebuild kit and where should I purcahse it?

Also, where can I find the correct transmission oil pump for my 93 GMC Typhoon?

Thank you:tup:

Re: transmission problems

A pump isn't that big a deal to do yourself. 700R4L60E.com has good kits. Get the 10 vane instead of the 13 vane I believe but double check with Dana (male, the owner).

I did my first rebuild not so long back and the pump isn't too bad, assuming it's not scored inside. Even a replacement minus the core charge might make sense. Good luck!

Re: transmission problems

I plan on rebuilding the entire transmission just to be safe. Heck, I'm gonna rebuild the engine too. Who ever built the trans and engine did a sh!tty job as far as I'm concerned. Burns oil like crazy, pump was not replaced during the trans rebuild..I would bet. Anyway, since I'm gonna be in there, might as well do it right:roll:
