transmission options

so here are a few of my ideas that i have come up with.

A: 4L80 conversion -

B: 700r4 from r.p.m or another builder, seems like the cheapest. or maybe i could get mine repaired.. its probably just a 3,4 band?? maybe

C: turbo 400/ or 350. only downside is no overdrive.. but i don't drive all that much anyways and i'm not on the e way that much. i talked with mike from r.p.m he said that this would not be that bad of an idea if i'm not on the highway much.

D: turbo 400/ or 350 with a transbrake.. conversion to a rear wheel drive/ race gas/ track only truck. little skinnies up front.. maybe a r.p.m front coil over kit. and a ford 9" in the rear.

let me hear your guy's thoughts.. who has done what.. really interested in hearing about the turbo 400/350's what was all involved besides lengthening the propshaft and shortening the driveshaft.

how much power are you going to make ? how much time is spent driving on the highway vs going to the track.

4l80 and don't worry about it again.seems to be the way to go . Pricey but sometimes you get what you pay for.

Re: transmission options

Have you tried the search feature and looked to see what people have posted up on all these transmissions? Just figured I would ask............

Powerglide.

what does it matter? You're not going to listen to what anyone has to say. Numerous people told you to stay away from a certain vendor years ago and you chose to do just the opposite. You're gonna start listening now? I doubt it.

Re: transmission options

Turbo 400 = 2.48:1 first gear ratio.
4L60 = 3.07:1 first gear ratio.

Big difference. You not only loose your overdrive, you loose the hole-shot too with the 400.

1st gear with our turbo torque is worthless with the 4l60 anyways. Lasts half a second on that hole shot.

TH400/4l80e share same 1st gear and it actually works to your favor to have less ratio so the gear last longer and the jump ton 2nd isn't as abrubt.

700 fix = could break at any time no matter who builds it.
th350 cheapest as I believe the length stays the same, no OD so your on verge of race car IMO.
th400 stronger, diff length so more cost, no OD as above
4l80e, conversion is expensive along with a good convertor, but a $1k rebuild will survive anything you can throw at it after that. Programmable shift points with a mouse -vs- tranny fluid in your hair and springs flying all over the ground.

Yea with the 700 all my truck would do is spin the tires on a boost launch with anything more than 5lbs that was the 4.3. The taller 1st gear in the 4l80 does work much better and the drop from first to second is hardly noticable compaired to the 700.

You gotta pay to play, 4l80 is by far the best all-around choice. You wont miss that overdrive till you head out with some other people and are doing 50mph getting 2mpg watching everyone else speed away.

Re: transmission options

the taller gear loads the turbo a bit better also.....

The downfall is the lack of OD...so think about that if you're doing lots of highway driving over 70mph.

+1 for TH400

I agree

I would love to see you go RWD so I can sell you this rear end but I don't think that is really a good idea, not needed and will take away from the overall enjoyment of the vehicle with your particular build.

Re: transmission options

What does first gear shift out of MPH wise with a 700r4/4l80e with the stock gears. What about with the 3.08's
30-35mph for the 700 it with 3.43's and what mabey 45-50 with the 3.08's.. Any one with a swap that can comment?

How about the 4L80E/t350/t400 with 3.43/3.08, i would like to see 1st gear to about 50-60mph.
Lets say your only spinning it to 6K rpm

If you could get 1st to 60mph 2nd to 100-120 and 3rd to 150-160 range. I think a t350 or a T400 would be great even on the highway.

You have a lot of NA spin the motor to the moon theory here. Turbo motors like to be loaded down, the more load the more boost and torque.

On jeremy's syclone we shift into OD at 80mph under WOT. When it does it is like your mom came up and kicked you right in the ass, the truck hunches down and off it goes.

This is fairly stock HP level.

No need to spin the crap out of the motor, we make torque use it.

It was off topic, more for the high HP people. I think that it would less violent launch, so less parts failure. And you would kill some 0-60mph time with out the shift. As well as going almost the whole track in 1 more gear.

There are very well applications where shifting is not helpful in drag racing. Powerglides although almost 50yrs old now are still used in this case.

If I was going to build an ALL out syty for drag I would think of a PG and some 3.08 are even taller gears.

So your idea isn't bad, but makes for a good discussion.

Re: transmission options

umm.. off the subject.. but.. i believe my truck was already there before you guys commented on a vendor.. nobody was really even man enough to stand up and directly say do NOT go them. wish someone would have. after a couple of years i remember somebody telling me to go get my truck. i remember at the nationals.. when i needed help with my truck.. nobody really cared to give any input.. except. dig. which tried to help me with some tuning. ... that specific vendor was the only one that took the time to go over things with me.. so. now we seen what happened..

so to say i'm not going to listen to anyone is just ridiculous. next time for other peoples sake.. speak up like a man!!

Re: transmission options

If you need a local core for your rebuild, I have one & a stock convertor too. To answer your queation it boils down to your funds. I just rebuilt my 700R4 cause I do not have the cash to do the 4L80E swap. I think it would be great to never have to worry again, but with a good build, parts, deep pan, and the ability to accuratly watch your trans temp readings, you can make one of these last for quite a while. I would venture to guess most of the fast trucks here are still doing it with the 700R4.

Re: transmission options

I have a Waller built 700 and so far I couldn't be happier with it. I daily drive my truck and race it every once in a while. I would have loved to have done the 4l80e swap but there was a hefty pricetag attatched to it. I already spent way too much and wouldn't think of spending any more.

If you're going to race the truck and drive it sometimes go with a TH-400, if your're going keep it AWD and very streetable go with 4L80E conversion. That is the hot "bullet-proof" setup.

OD all the way. I remember when me and a friend went to the tack, about 40 miles from here. His TY was swapped over to a 400. On the highway, I was doing about 110 and I could just his big smiling teeth in my mirror. He told me it was revving sky high and I believe it. I remember my Vette had a 350 and at 85mph I was at like 3500 RPM or some ridiculous shit. It sucked either way you looked at it. **** 3 speeds!!
