here is what I came up with in 30 seconds by typing "ATF" in the search box...

I'm sure you will find even more by typing the word "dextron" or "trans fluid" in the search box as well. educate yourself.

Re: transmission fluid?

Just replaced my tranny last week.
We used Valvoline MaxLife synthetic blend multi vehicle ATF ($6.00/quart) + LubeGard additive ($14 from NAPA).
My tranny guy didn't recommend Royal Purple as he felt it was a waste of money. He builds 700r4s all the time at his shop.
He has a 500hp Camaro running a 700r4 using this.
DEX 3 is what came in our trucks stock, I believe.

More info on additive:

Re: transmission fluid?

run the cheapest trans fluid you can find, mix in some typeF even, stuff all works great. Lube gard is a nice touch actually, I have used it and had it recommended to me by more than one respected trans guy. My outlook on types of trans fluid to use come from those same people.

Re: transmission fluid?

Jay,

I'm suprised your trans guy told you to use Synthetic fluid. All I've read for years, is to stay away from Synthetic because it allows slippage causing a ton of heat in our trans.

Is this your bush?
Re: transmission fluid?

Dex III/mercon just use a high mileage version and some lubeguard and you'll be ok! Unless you wanna roll synthetic go with ams oil $10+ a quart. I did it in my bonny 60000 still is red as blood and not burnt.

Re: transmission fluid?

I use 1 bottle of Red Lubeguard, 2 Quarts of Type F, and the rest Dex III.

All conventional, no synthetics.

Re: transmission fluid?

I run standard fluid and Lube Gard per my builder. No fancy fluid required. Trans is 4 years old and I race all the time. We pulled the pan last year to check for whatever. Clean. New fluid and Lube Gard and away I went.

Re: transmission fluid?

Thanks for all the advice . It looks like I'm going with a good dextron 3 atf with the lube guard.
