Transfer case?

When I have the trottle applied, the truck runs fine.

If I take my foot totally off the throttle I can feel a vibration through the floor pan. This continues as the truck decelerates unless I apply the brakes.

Any ideas? I suspect my transfer case is on the way out.

Re: Transfer case?

Remove the front driveshaft and see if it goes away. Another thought would be bad u-joints in the rear driveshaft.

Re: Transfer case?

I have the same, I've put it down to the front drive shaft that I removed and I lost my match marks. It was much smoother before. That together with a worn (loose) UJ on the cardan isn't helping either. Either that or its that Hog thats putting its trottle where it shouldnt! :rotf: Another cause of vibration if the trucks been laid up is tyre sorry tire flat spotting. My Ty shakes for a while until the tires warm up, especially when the weathers cold.

Re: Transfer case?

I was thinking something to do with the tc seing as maybe it needs topping up with oil. Not a vibration, more of a grumble.

The prop shaft is a brand new D&R one I got from Blake.

Do I still need to remove it?

It's not flat wheels although I was concerned. It's clearly a driveline issue as just the slightest touch of accelerator and it goes away. Loose TC chain?

Tranny is brand new after rebuild as well. Brand new TC.

:dunno:

Rear driveshaft u joints might be the reason....

Thanks guys - it'll be here soon and someone can have a ride in it and see what they think.

Re: Transfer case?

transfercases won't vibrate. if the chain is too loose it will skip teeth. and you will notice. fix your bent rim. there can't be anything in there that will create an unbalance the way you are discribing..

if it ain't your bad wheel, try to unbolt the TC from the flexplate. and rotate it by 1 bolt..

hav i ever been wrong :p

Re: Transfer case?

Downpipe touching the floor or frame? Did you replace the trans mount with a urethane one and leave the flat plate on it? (Did this on my truck and it just raised the trans enough for the transfer case to touch the floor. Drove me nuts!)

Pull the front prop shaft out and take it for a ride... That will eliminate the front driveline. Or just bring it up to NJ when you get here and I'll look at it ... I have another rear driveshaft with newer u-joints.

Re: Transfer case?

Rene - will bear that in mind - cheers.

Boosted - where in NJ? I have a brake issue as well and need to replace the caliper. Smaug may be helping as well. My C5 came off so I need to fit a new one, torque down all the bolts with loctite and bleed the line, maybe on the dockside if I can't get a trailer to somewhere. Then I need to maybe leave it somewhere that weekend for a wedding in Longh Island and then drive back to Wilmington.

I need to do all this stuff when the truck gets here so have some time. Getting it driveable is the main issue and that's the brakes. Other than that, ran like a top!

Re: Transfer case?

Maybe the clue is "unless I apply the brakes." Could it be one or both of the half-shafts?

Re: Transfer case?

I guess possibly. I would really like someone else to ride in the truck that is familiar. I'm guessing.

If it's a half shaft, what are the implications? How would I tell?

I was also thinking the other day that driving it with one front wheel jammed may not be so good. 15ft total - have I hurt anything?

VC perhaps?

It's always something! :rotf:

Re: Transfer case?

Mark, I'm in central NJ (hillsborough, somerset county). I'm about an hour and 45 mins north of Wilmington, De. Erik is probably about 45 mins or so north of me. Let me know what weekend you guys are planning on meeting up and I will try to come up and offer some assistance.... I'm pretty handy and can figure out just about everything aside from my own truck :rotf:
