Transfer case support bar

What exactly is the function of this? How much does it really do for us? (The bar I am talking about is the two parts that connect the transfercase to your bellhousing.)

Not to hijack your thread but what about when doing an 80-e conversion?

Do you just cut and reweld an extension for it?

Re: Transfer case support bar

I did a cut and weld in and extension, but I think Mike at RPM talked about making a adapter so you could bolt in the the bar unmodified at one time also.

Edit:
Maybe someone have done a conversion and are not running this could chime in and tell if they have had any problems?

Re: Transfer case support bar

Hmmm, how? Do you mean the transmission or the transfercase?

Have done a few transmission changes lately and started question the function of this a little. After have thought this trough, after your comment, now I believe the best support it provides is lenghtwise, along the axle going to the front diff, keeping the end of the transfercase that "sticks out" in a fixed position relating to the transmission. And removing some of the stress added by the axle and front diff moving. And thereby helping the transfercase staying stable. But the slotted boltholes doesnt make sence to me if that is the purpose.

It's purpose is to be in the way when you remove the trans or propshaft lol.

Re: Transfer case support bar

the propshaft has a double-cardan u-joint at the rear of it. By design, the rear joint operates at a pretty good angle. When torque is applied to the joint, it wants to "straighten out". If straightened out, it gets longer. So the brace is to keep the front output shaft flange from being "pushed back" when torque is applied to the double u-joint.

Re: Transfer case support bar

Had any problems? Are the case showing some kind of signs of added stress or any issues at either end of the axle (transfer or front diff?

Re: Transfer case support bar

I honestly left mine off on my Twin Turbo V8, have not seen anything go wrong with it but it isn't driven daily either and sits broken most of time.

With that said I would never leave one off for a customer.
