Trans temps

Just wondering what kind of trans temps people are seeing with their setup. I recently installed twin coolers under the bed, one a hi-tek B&M, and the other just a B&M supercooler with a 500 CFM hayden fan. well it is hot as hell down (mid 90's) here and I have them basically turning on as soon as the ignition switch comes on, and they have been keeping my temps around the 140 mark or so with in town driving, stoplight to stoplight. they very slowing creep to 140, took about 20 minutes of traffic driving to get there, but didn't go any higher. I know that is nowhere near being overheated but just wondering what temps you guys were seeing.

You're in luck. I recently did some testing on this exact topic. Here goes (GA Humidity & 90-95 deg temps):

Cruise - B&M Cooler in front of radiator (no fan) - 125 max
Stop & Go- B&M Cooler in front of radiator (no fan) - 140 max

Cruise - B&M Cooler in front of radiator (with 7" fan) - 125 max
Stop & Go - B&M Cooler in front of radiator (with 7" fan) - 125 max

Cruise - B&M Cooler under bed (no fan) - 135 max
Stop & Go - B&M Cooler under bed (no fan) - 175 max

Cruise - B&M Cooler under bed (with air scoop) - 130 max
Stop & Go - B&M Cooler under bed (with air scoop) - 165 max

Cruise - B&M Cooler under bed (with 7" fan) - 125 max
Stop & Go - B&M Cooler under bed (with 7" fan) - 135 max

Under the bed, the cooler is neat the exhaust so the temps are higher, but I also made 1/2" ID hydraulic hoses for the cooler instead of bent 5/16 metal lines. This helps fluid capacity as well as lowering pressure in lines.

Other tranny mods are TC cover removed, 9/11 TC, deep GM pan.

there are some pics of les's former syclone, the one mark (maxtor) bought, on the northeastsyty site i think...his underbody pics may be in one of his albums there...that truck has a trick looking cover that has a bunch of holes through it...if i recall, i think its even polished...sweet truck for sure...

great info on the tranny cooler hood...i always thought under the bed would be cooler...certainly not...

It's not that it "couldn't" be cooler. In my truck, it's about airflow and relation to the exhaust. Despite the fact that I have a dump, I still have a full exhuast out to the rear. The only spot for the cooler was under the passenger side, at the front of the bed, right between the d-shaft and exhaust. This heat radiates to the cooler and hurts it's efficiency.

When I swap in the 13 gal tank, I may move the cooler to the otherside and test it, or I may just redesign the exhaust alltogether. We'll see.

I think that with a fan, a scoop, larger lines, and a heat shield from the exhuast, the cooler could be as efficient (if not more) as being front mounted. It's just so hard to beat the tremendous airflow provided up front. Although, the cleanliness of a rear mounted cooler is more than worth a slightly hotter trans temp IMO.

yeah it's a lot cleaner and don't have my tranny lines running next to the crossover or anything. good to know I guess mine are about the same, what size stall do you have on your TC, mine is 3200 and it builds up a truck load of heat just driving around town. My setup is about the same, no cover, twin coolers under bed, 9/11 3200 stall TC, and Derale pan.

mine are usually stuck right around 150* with my old 24,000 B&M unit mounted in front of the radiator with no fan.

I also have a deep TCI pan, stock inspection cover and 10.5" converter.

Don, those are some good temps for the tranny fluid in stop/go traffic in the DFW heat. Nice work on the set up.

Last year on the way to Nats, Rudy's temps were in the 250-300* range. :eek:

im sure the tranny lines could be somehow hardwired around and over the tranny to the to the drivers side to avoid all of that heat...and the front still seems like the best location for the aux. cooler because of what you said... just have to run more rubber piping in an effort to retain the stock radiator cooling as well as the new cooler for it to make a difference.

damn, one of these downpipe covers sure would be nice, might be especially nice to our famous starter wires...

thanks for the props Kurt, Patrick helped naturally. got my first starter click after replacing all that crap, we are talking less then 600 miles. I can't see any sign of melting wires or anything, but there is a truck load of heat there. And just in case someone is wondering, I coated my PTE kit with ceramic paint and it doesn't keep it any cooler than with no paint, just looks 50 times better, but it does cool down very fast after you turn the motor off, much faster than stock setup, which helps alot. Being as everytime I drive my truck I have to fix something else :x

120-140 F ? Those are really low Trans Oil temps. Are any of them at WOT ? How R U measuring them and where ?

this is my setup......I have soft lines coming over the tranny to the drivers side, then I have the basic summit remote filter with temp gauge mounted on the frame, after running through that, thay meet up right where the fuel lines connect then turn to hard lines (just fuel lines I bought at Pep Boys) all the way down the frames rail then go to soft lines to my coolers in the back. I get about 140-150 just driving around in the Texas 98 degree heat (that is saying something) with a 3200 stall converter, I can tell a difference if driving when my converter is locked or not by the temps.

I have done a 0-100 mph blast with launching at about 5-7 lbs. my starting temps were 160 or so after building boost and went up to right at 190 or so at the end of the run. But with both fans going it immediately dropped down to the 160 range, then slowly dropped a little more.

it was a lot of effort but I really like with having them in the back and with twin fans that even if you are sitting still then you are getting good airflow over the coolers. So even if after I do a run at he track and am driving back slow then I will still get a significant temp drop where as someone with just an aux cooler up front won't lose that much heat cause they are driving slow. same theory applies for street racing, if you are tearing it up from stoplight to stoplight, you are not getting a lot of airflow over the front mounted aux cooler. This was my theory when doing this setup. With the cooler up front you can have really lower tranny temps when rolling down the freeway cause of airflow but that is not where people usually destroy the trans, it's on the street.

I have stock tranny, bigger transmission pan, completely B& M trickshift fluid, and my temps are around 180 degrees.

damn, i just upgraded from the 24,000 to the 28,000 cooler, I replaced the stock lines with AN fittings and braided steel and I actually have a higher stall converter now also.

I used to run 140-150* while cruising, now I the needle barely lifts off the gauge, Id say my temps are like 110* while crusing now. I dunno if its the cooler or the lines or what, but I love it!

We'll see what they do on the way to Nats.

Alright, I gots a silly little question.

Anybody know what a "Good" transmission fluid temperature is? If so, what is your reference?

I know the "cooler is better" theory, but I have to guess there is a point at which the fluid is too cool. Engine oil needs to get up to about 180 to 220 to be able to get the condensate and combustion byproducts to boil off. Obviously tranny fluid doesn't have combustion byproducts, but how about condensate and such? I'd almost suspect that 110 degrees is too cool, but I have no proof of that. And I expect most of you guys don't run when its real cold, but what happens when the outside temp drops down to 15?

Just trying to figure this all out.

Yeh, I kinda agree w U ! The temps quoted seem to be bordering on "too low". I know that according to the info from the trans performance vendors, 180-190 F is a good temp, and temps above there - sustained - can sacrifice some longevity.

But we are talking about an oil here and the viscosity goes up exponentially as temp decreases. I'm thinking that any temps below ~ 150 F will not be doing any good and perhaps more harm than good.

Perhaps we should address the Q to the trans gurus like Art Carr, Mike Kurtz, Bruce Toelle, etc.

This is a quote that Brian Hartman e-mailed me a few years ago....

With the sender in line with the tranny out hard line, you want to see between 140ºF and 190ºF. While doing a brake torque, try not to go over 210ºF.
