trans reinstall question...

So hopefully I should be installing my trans again soon, yippee.

Have any of you guys bolted up the xfer case and accessories (not including the x-member) and just lifted the whole unit up all at once and bolted it in? I have a motorcycle jack and was just thinking if it might be easier to do it this way since I should be able to balance everything on it.

Truck is on jackstands, so dont want to be stupid with trying to do something I shouldnt, especially if im by myself.

Thoughts?

I have not done it (R&R'd the trans) but I believe most people do them individually. I just did the transfer case by itself by myself and I'm not that strong. Me and the floor jack worked together. :rotf: Went right in. Don't forget there's a gasket 'tween the two.

I know that work on a Ty, but no clue on the Sy. Id still probably do them seperate since thats what Im used to.

every time i've ever pulled or put the transmission in i have never removed the transfer case from the transmission

yeah, this will be #4 R&R for me and usually I do it seperate. t-case/trans gasket noted... i accidently ripped it during the removal

i should note.... truck doesnt have any drivetrain or mounts in it from the motor back....trans, t-case, x-member, propshaft, driveshaft, etc.... its all out.

with the motorcycle jack, it basically would sit level and just lift right up into place with the TC already installed, hook up the lines, plug in everything, slide in the x-member and get it bolted up before i dropped the jack and cut down install time....at least, thats what im thinking how it should go.

whoops, sorry...yeah the torsions are still in, its been awhile since ive seen the underside of my truck

definately will measure to see if i can pull it off.

We put my 80e in bolted to the transfer case , but unless you have a few more helping hands I wouldnt try it .

i cant see where you could just go straight up. you have to lift the tail in first over the crossmember and then continue up with the tranny.

Thats what Dave was saying. Adam, dont do it, just do them separate or youll end up with problems, unless you have like 4 people there.

Adam, it's hard to get the trans square with the engine because the motor is usually sagging abit. I've done it, but that's with no torsion xmember on a lift no less. I think on the ground in the garage you pretty much gotta do it one at time. Let me know if you need help, I've only done it 20 or so times.

I think on the ground in the garage you pretty much gotta do it one at time. Let me know if you need help, I've only done it 20 or so times.

One at a time. If you connect the transfer case to the back of the trans and try to install it, it is nearly impossible to get to the transmission to engine bellhousing bolt on the top drivers side. Not to mention the T-case is constantly trying to twist the assembly sideways. Leave the trans hanging down a bit. Before you put the crossmember back on, put the T-case on. You'll be surprized how high you have to push up on the rear of the t-case to make it slide on. This will give you plenty of clearance. Then put the crossmember on.

yeah, no prob on the one at a time.... its how i did it the past 3 times without prob. just wanted to ask if i could put it in all at once without prob, which is obvious it wont be and not smart. guess im just anxious after so long on jackstands

The transfercase weights about 70 pounds so it can be "fun" by yourself. Don't forget that without the rear driveshaft installed, it will puke ATF on ya if you tilt it back too far...

if i cant bench press 70#s, i got problems, heh.

when i yanked it this last time, i used the motorcycle jack for both the trans and tcase. it was cake. best investment evar!

Does the jack get high enough to put the trans into the bed of the truck? That's probably the best place for it. LOL.

Trust me, If I had the money laying around I would have had dad's vette sitting in the garage already.

Helps to drain oil before removal, and when separating let the oil that collects between the two drain out. Once you do that very little spills. I changed mine in the street (don't ask) and left no stains on the pavement. For install I just propped it up on the xmember and used a floor jack to raise it up into place, worked great.

not spilling anything is no fun.

its best when fluid pours out everywhere and gets all over your tools and the all the nuts/bolts and leaves a nice pool on the ground that you get to lay in so you can sniff the fumes and get all in your hair.
