Trans rebuild

Stab it and steer it
Here's the estimate on the rebuild from my trans guy:

Delco 5 pinion rear planet 285.00
Delco 5 pinion front planet 225.00
Beast sun shell 95.00
HP overhaul kit. blue plate clutches.Kolene steels?, new roller clutches 495.00
Labor (I bring trans to him) 600.00

Comments? What am I leaving out?

TIA

Re: Trans rebuild

I am not totally up the 5 pinion stuff, but I think the GM 5 pinion parts used a cheaper metal which makes them weaker.

I would guess the price difference is the diference between wholesale (and probably similiar to what he pays) and list prices. This is a common in the automotive repair industry.

HP overhaul kit. blue plate clutches.Kolene steels?, new roller clutches

Kolene Steels are the metal plate between the clutch and what the clutch actually applies to. I would guess that Torington Bearings, not roller clutches.

I would use a larger TV boost valve (0.500 or larger)

Re: Trans rebuild

I'd agree that it's a bit on the expensive side, but since he's the guy doing the work, he's gonna charge what he's gonna charge.

I'd skip the planetaries, if they aren't pitted or otherwise messed up. I'm not entirely convinced that they're that they live that much longer than the stockers.

There's other things I'd get first... reinforced input drum, among others.

I understand, I tend to go with people who come recommended and he is highly respected locally as a builder. The good part, if you want to call it that, is he will build virtually whatever I tell him so what the "among others" items are is what I'm after since I know little about automatics.

Thanks:tup:

Re: Trans rebuild

It depends a lot on how big you're looking to go. If you want an 11.00 SyTy 700R4, it's gonna be different than one built for mid-low 12s.

My current refreshed trans is pretty much stock parts, with the exception of the reinforced input drum, beast shell, and a decent set of clutches. I also ditched the fairbanks 1-2 servo for a stocker, and added a slightly better 3-4 piston/cover to combat a leaky+loose stock unit I had.

I had alto reds (9 disc) in it, and they looked good coming out. I put Raybestos blues back in, just to try 'em, with new steels. I had a wide red-lined band, and found it to be kinda burned. I went with kevlar going back in, we'll see how it goes.

The clearances are super critical. You can't skimp. New bushings everywhere. Check endplay, and fix it if it's out. Check clutch clearances, and do what needs to be done to get them right. Most of the time, "whatever" is what you get from a trans shop.

I'm expecting this to live through mid-high 11s. The only other thing I'd possibly consider doing is cryo treating the output shaft. I'm fairly careful about how I run things, though, and I try to keep the chatter out of the driveline.

You can build a super-killer 700, but I'm not convinced that all the billet parts and cryo-ing everything results in longer life. The loose nut behind the wheel has more to do with trans life.

Low to mid 12's is my goal. I did have one freak run at 12.495 (stock block and heads, Ultimate and alky) but usually the truck ran right at 13. Rebuilding the motor as you know, if I can run consistent low to mid 12's that will be very cool. A foray to a high 11 would be neat to have just to brag about though.

And yes the nut behind the wheel, what has that got to do with anything?:rotf::rotf:

Thanks for your input.

Good god Don, you're definitely getting kind of raped on the parts. But like Dig said, he's doing the work so.... I would agree with what Dig says, all those fancy parts aren't necessarily going to make it "bullet proof". I think you would be fine with a good set of clutches, a good 2-4 band and, beast sun shell, good hard parts and skip the planets.
