trans cooler

I installed a remote filter and a trans cooler. 100 miles later the trans let go. Looks to be a bad tv cable. It was slipping and not finding gears. When I drained the fluid it look ok. still red but the drain plug had some metal shavings in it. The question is is my cooler toast too. there was a filter on it but I dont want my new trans to be full of metal. Can it be cleaned? if it was old I would buy a new one but it was only on for a few months. I guess I can blow out and flush the braded lines but can I flush out the cooler. I would pull out the whole trans cooler completely and flush out the whole system just to make sure. Then search around or take a good long look at the setup and make sure you reinstall it correctly. It should be fine, I don't see why you would need another new one. :2cents:

If you had your filter upstream of all your cooling, you should be OK provided that you flush them out well. I use a drill pump when I have to flush out a cooler and the lines:


It can be purchased from Tractor Supply Company or Sears. If you have a decent hardware store close by, they should have them as well. When my friend grenaded the transmission in his Tahoe, his transmission temperature gauge was pegged. That ATF that we flushed out of his coolers and lines was jet black. Flushed it with over eight quarts of ATF before I came out clean...

If you didn't have any filtering before the coolers, consider them collateral damage. Any shrapnel that may be trapped inside the cooler despite flushing it will take out your new transmission if it breaks free. Not worth the risk.

filter was before the coller. Out of trans to in on remote filter. I have a drill type pump that attaches to a garden hose I use for work(same as in your pic but different brand). Pumping atf throught it??

Correct. You will have to get some tubing and fittings to make it work. If your drill pump is anything like mine, don't let it run dry after you get it pumping with the ATF. Mine takes a LONG time to get reprimed if I do.

I use solvent and siphon draw blow gun, it's better cleaning with actual solvent. If you have an air compressor.

No air compressor. mine died. I do have 20lb co2 tanks in my van I use for blowing lines at work. They work great on the truck.

i use a straw cut in half and a razorblade to blow lines at work. :rotf: jk
