FORGIVE ME I AM NEW!!

I recently purchased a 93 Ty. It has high mileage but were 90% highway miles from its original owner. 180,000 miles. Truck was well maintained and received a new crate motor in 2005. I know this from receipt. My worry now is the integrity of the trans, transfer case, and rear.

What is the weak link or links here? I know the 60e is not the toughest in the world. How about the transfercase and rear?

Who is a reliable source for purchase of either part?
Is there anyone close to South Carolina?

Thanks in advance.

If so, Id still wonder if its a true SyTy shortblock, 2005 sounds pretty late for them to still have one kicking around.

you don't have a 60E, you have a 4L60 / 700R4, they are the weak link, the integrity will remain unknown until it lets go or start slipping. Check the fluid level, color and smell. If its properly filled, pink/red and doesn't smell burnt, you have a sporting chance, but even good transmissions can let go in these trucks and any moment.

As for the transfer case, they are pretty tough. The only part that is prone to failure is the viscous coupler, but if you are not experiencing any weird noises or issues, I would leave it alone and just change the fluid in it.

The rears are usually not subject to much issue on stock trucks, due to the torque splitting of the transfer case, they have a longer life than most people expect. Again, fluid service and your probably good to go unless you suspect a problem with it.

I am hearing a whine that gets louder with speed. Having said that I have only noticed it since I put my new wheels and tires on the truck. I intend on checking the tires first. The wheels are from a C5 vette 275-40-18 on back and 245-45-17 in front

It pains me to say this....but pick one size tire and rim combo all they way around....makes things alot easier and cheap when it comes to buying tires.....I had to buy two sets of wagon wheels to get a matching set of 17's due to people never wanting to sell them in just pairs or break a set. I ended up with 17's all the way around with p275/40r17s nice look. ..not too wide but wide enough and cheaper to replace all 4 tires than the $1200 it's costed to run the 17s in front and 18's in back. I feel more comfort with my tires and not having the what if they burn up the tcase coupler in my head all the time. Ya get me? But do as you wish snd learn from it ! Most of all have fun! Good luck! If ya need anything hit me up....oh and cut those god dam cv axle nubs down to put on your center caps...God it looks tacky as f%×k!

Re: trans and transfercase info

So you either need new rear tires or your $200 set of rims and tires will burn up a $350 viscous clutch in your transfer case...

This may not be correct for your tire brand but until you post up what they are here is a guess...
Replace the rears with 275/35R18 in the back

Or try to find another set of fronts or rears. There are enough out there...

Point taken, hope the whine I am hearing isn't from the clutch already. They have been on the truck for less than 100 miles
