Hey Guys...

Got a 700R4 question.

I'm replacing the TQ converter seal in my 700R4 (happens to be in an 88 Suburban). Got the tranny out, the old seal out, and put the new one in. Suprisingly no sweat, no blood, very few tears.

But, then, I had a troubling thought. Should I have put some kind of sealant on the seal (the press in portion) to make sure it stays put and doesn't leak? I thought of something like Permatex make a gasket or something else?

I dont use anything and havent had one leak yet. Its a pretty tight fit inside the pump so as long as you dont mangle it when driving the new seal in place you should be fine. Be sure to throw some vaseline on the TC hub or inside the seal for extra protection during start up though (there may already be some lube on the seal from the factory...depends on what brand seal it is if its there. Cheapy=no lube and NAPA or the like usually has lube installed from the manufacturer).

Thanks for the advice....I'll make sure I lube up the seal and surface on the TC it mates to.

Was one of those second guessing kind of deals...Did't want to have to pull it out a 2nd time for a leak in the same darn spot.

isn''t there somekind of stuff alpied to the outer ring of the seal. so when you install it, it will seal itselve?

Could be as the paint they use on the outter metal surface seems to be pretty soft. Dunno if it cheap paint or purposely done that way to help sealing but Ive prolly installed a hundred or so counting TC/front pump seals, pinion seals, and rear trans seals and havent had one leak around the outter surface (yet).

I normall use red loctite but thats with higher than normal pressures. stock pressure and stock seal should be fine.

Thanks for the input guys....

I got it all back together again and running (good thing, since I only had it apart because it was leaking fluid at the bellhousing).

Now the true test will be whether it leaks fluid or not. And only time (and a few miles) will tell there.
