Timing chain sets? And short blocks?

I all,

I'm about to replace my 100K timing chain and gears, i know that our trucks came with roller from factory but i'm nor sure if any 4.3 liter timing chain set up will work? I also was wondering if we have roller cam from factory?

Second question, Sy/Ty 4.3 liter blocks are they the same as any 4.3 liter (same year) except for pistons and rods? I'm building a stronger lower end and thought i get a regular 4.3 block from a junkyard if they are the same?

the timing chain to use are true roller... cloyes make the best ones.. here is the part number .. CLO-9-3145. its about $85

Hey, while were on the subject, since the 4.3L is basically a 5.7L w/ 2 cylinders chopped off, can you use a 5.7L roller cam timing setup?.... and, has anyone went with gears instead of a chain?

stock chains are just as good as the cloyes true rollers. only the cloyes last longer. all will stretch. im running a gear drive on my ty. this holds my timing right on the money.

I thought about to go with a gear drive, but was told they where very noisy?
Can you tell me what brand you using and if it's that noisy. I don't mind some gear noise, but not to much

I was under the assumption this came up in discussions past... Possibly about inducing false knock ? You have had NO problems ??

Well I had the Pete Jackson "Noisy" small block chevy gears in my El Camino. Needless to say they are no longer in it. So damn noisy I couldn't even adjust the rockers.....

I have heard the quiet gear drives, you can still hear them, but it doesnt drive you bonkers....
I am assuming the 782-350-91C SB-Chevy with Factory Roller Cam (excluding LT1) would be for our application?

NJTY180, YES THE NEW GEAR DRIVES ARE ALOT LESS NOISY. THE OLD PETE JACKSONS ARE WAY TOO LOUD. ANY SET UP FOR SMALL BLOCK IS THE SAME. I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH KNOCK BUT IM RUNNING AT -2 DEG. ON THE TIMING.

Don't forget the main bearing caps are stronger on a sy/ty engine....

I'm confused now???? I bought the Cloyes 9-3145 timing chain kit, but after reading Jeg's catalog that part number is for a 4.3 V6 with factory roller cam???

We don't have roller cam in our SY's do we???

I'm kind of worried that i bought the wrong set and when i take it all apart i get stranded with wrong parts?

Please can someone updated me on this issue, i hate to get stock with wrong parts.

SyTys have a roller cam as do the rest of the 90 deg engines in small trucks (S series/GMC sonoma)and cars after 1988 (might be 87).

Only thing after 88 that had a flat tappet cam was the full sized trucks with the 305/350. These were random too. As in some trucks had the roller others didnt. The 305 in towclone (90 GMC 1500) has a flat tappet cam but the block has the roller lifter retainer bolt bosses cast in it but not drilled.

Any timing chain/gear drive for a small block V8 with the factory roller cam will work on our 4.3..

Sounds like you have the right parts BTW...
