Re: Th400

This conversation is pretty interesting. It's pretty cool that even though a Syclone showed better times with no changes except a 4L80E and the weight is "still" an issue. The planetaries are huge, the shafts are huge and the clutches are huge. Way huge safety factor for the little trucks. But....it's heavy. It doesn't matter. People will always feel very strongly toward a specific trans. I've also heard price....Price is driven by the market. Waller and others showed how a decent 700 could be built without spending $8000. Eventually it will become known that a 4L80E can be built without spending $6000 to make it fit. It'll just take a marketing curve. To dispell any rumor about the 4L80E vs the 400, the 4L80E IS a TH400 with OD added onto the front of it. Many of the same parts are in it. So the only extra cost of the 4L80E vs the 400 is your gonna pay more for the lockup converter and you need a controller. You'd have spent the SAME money for a billet 700 lockup converter as you would a billet 4L80E lockup converter and you have to modify shaft lengths to install a 400 anyway. Trans crossmember for a 400, yep has to be modified. What you should do is hold onto your 700 and wait for the "newness" of the 4L80E to wear off and when the price comes down, get one. By then the big thing will the the 6L80E (derived from the allison) and 4L80E's will eventually be like the 700's. Everything has a cycle. Just give it time.

Re: Th400

I believe its just a matter of your particular build and what you want it to do. Myself, i am determined to have a low 10 second - high 9 second truck that i can still drive on the street effectively (i had too much fun on the power tour). with my t76 and a bowtie stroker etc, i doubt seriously that anyone could put together a 700 that will hold for any amount of time with me behind the wheel. A 400 would be plenty for track use and even going to the local cruise night at the burger king or whatever. However, especially now that i have lockup again, i would never try to run a 400 on any kind of long trip. I LOVE the way my truck runs and drives with the 4l80 in it. Its no more difficult than the 400 or 700, just need more parts. the computer is awesome, you can custom taylor the tranny to your taste. Yes it cost more, but you have to pay to play. we all know that. I dont mind breaking parts, i dont mind wearing parts out, i dont mind working on my truck. so i drive the sh*t out of it. thats why i have it.

Also like Jeff said before, the 1-2 shift isnt near as severe of a drop. I could only launch before at about 6-7 lbs without turning the tires to smoke on the street, but now with the taller 1st gear i can get 11 lbs and not even hardly spin at all from the hole and you almost dont know it shifted second because its such a smooth transition. that alone is probably one reason why there truck performs better with nothing else changed.

Re: Th400

Crimson mentioned the 6L80E.....I think it and the 6L90E (which is supposed to be coming in the next generation pickups) will be the next hot ticket. I'm not sure that any of those are Allison derivatives, but they are all supposed to be a modular type design. Ought to be real interesting. And probably REALLY expensive.

Yeah, if you look at the internals and how it's set up, it looks a LOT like the Allisons. One of the problems is that you need a computer for everything. You can't even check the fluid level without a computer as there is no dipstick.

Re: Th400

When my tranny burned i tried buying a rebuild kit with no luck, after some advise from Mr.Rossler, Mike @ RPM and J Waller i decided to send it to get rebuilt by a PRO. Waller ended up being the best choice for my shipping distance (central Mexico), budget and performance needs.
I also considered buyin a pretty beefed up Th350 and one of those GearVendors OD units and makin it a "6 speed" trans but i figured it would take tons of time, adaptations and unconsidered expenses. Still wondering how it would perform, any opinions?

Ps. May be this was off topic but its another option that could be pretty bullet proof.

Re: Th400

This turned out to be an very good thread, although the subject has been talked about before.

That 6L80E is a wet dream hahahaha ...I guess its gone be a HUGE price tag on that one?

I'm still kinda in "I dont know how I should do". 400 with 3.08's or run the 700 as long as it lasts, this time, and after that make the big step to a 80 tranny.

Re: Th400

Again, we come full circle...it depends what the truck will be used for, imo... If its going to be a mostly race/street race truck with limited highway travel, then I would go TH400 with 3.08-s.
Highway revs wont be unacceptably high, although a somewhat higher than stock, but it would be cheaper and durable, and with the cash saved to be spent on making the truck faster, maybee make a faster truck, if the budget has limits.
If You drive on the street and highways a lot and only occasionally street race, and take it to the races a few times a year...then I would run the 700 as long as it lasts and save up for an 80.
