? SyTy Transfer Case Strength

LIL QIK

HELL YEA I GOT BOOST!
This will sound a little odd...so bare with me please. But I just bought a 99 3/4 ton Suburban with the big block and 4L80e. It's currently a 2wd. I'm planning on using a kit and convert it over to a front solid axle 4x4 setup. But instead of running a typical 4x4 transfer case.....I want to convert the SyTy transfer case with all the billet stuff like I did with my Syclone....and run the Suburban AWD. The thing is that I've never heard of our transfer cases being put in anything but the lightweight stuff. Could some of you supply some input on what you think about using it. I know it's holding up to big dogs running big times.....but still has me curious on if it would hold up.

And know....this isn't really for racing or anything like that. This is what my wife will drive daily (her choice...lol). It's also going to be the tow rig. Most of the tracks around me and other places that I've seen sometimes have you parking in the grass and stuff like that. I'm curious on how the transfer case would hold up if it did happen to get off in the mud.

Thanks for the input....

Dave

I don't know about towing with it. If your not beating on it then it may be ok, but the load of a trailer may be too much. Thats a lot of torques.

Re: ? SyTy Transfer Case Strength

I personally would just run a 3/4 ton selectable transfer and be done with it much cheaper makes the insall a little more difficult due to the linkage and shifter.

I also don't think it would be a good to tow with.

Re: ? SyTy Transfer Case Strength

So what's the actual concern...? I was under the impression that as far as the rear wheels are concerned....that the input shaft and the output shaft are more or less directly locked together (non dependant of the viscous coupler). I was under the impression that the viscous coupler is just for the front propshaft. Please correct me if I'm wrong. It's been a while since I've had mine open. I'm also under the impression that know no torgue or power is transfered to the front wheels until the rear wheels are spinning faster than the front tires. Again...please correct me if I'm mistaken.

All the levers and linkage were some of the things I was trying to stay away from. I've been looking into what it would take to wire up a transfercase out of an actual 4x4 from relative years as the 99 file size. It's all button controlled.....but don't truly know what would be involved. I just kind of liked the simplicity of the 4472.....but was unsure if it would truly work or not.

If you want four wheel drive, why not buy a 4X4? I know AWD and 4WD is different, but why would you need AWD. IMO the expense to do this swap would be greater than selling your ride to get what you want.

Yeap....I understand all of this. But this is what I've got....and it would have cost me almost 3x the amount to get it in 4x4. Just happened to get a good deal on it. The 4x4 part was an after thought. Plus I'm just not a big fan of the newer IFS setups. Thanks anyway guys....

There shouldn't be any problem with towing or whatsoever. We can tow with our cars, too, you just have to make sure everything's proper cooled.
Stock BW4472 is strong enough to run with 9 sec trucks, that's much more torque that any stock bigblock can provide.

But you really have to keep in mind that 4l80e's first gear is as low as 2.48 (4l60 has 3.06, and thats a lot of difference), and you will not have 4Low mode in t-case. So you won't be able to easily pull heavy stuff on rough terrains, on hills and so on, pull someone out of mud or else. Stock 4wd Sub will easily get twice the torque on wheels!

I'd use some other t-case.

Re: ? SyTy Transfer Case Strength

The v6 blazer was rated at about 5k lbs towing. So my concern would be that the suburban is significantly heavier than the blazer. So you are eating into the total weight that the t-case can handle. Even know you aren't engaging the front wheels, you are still putting an obscene amount of torque through the case. When the big power trucks are putting power through, they are leaving under less boost due to tire spin. I would be worried about twisting up the shafts in the t-case.

Re: ? SyTy Transfer Case Strength

There can't be more torque in the drivetrain than engine can provide. So if 9 sec truck is fine with stock t-case, than Sub will do too. It's not THAT heavy, really :) Well, IMO.

Re: ? SyTy Transfer Case Strength

Those 9-sec trucks that you talk about have $1200 planet sets in them and 32 spline billet input shafts. Some people think that they also would last longer with a billet output shaft as well. Our t-cases hold up to the abuse, because it is not moving a lot of weight. How many big block cars do you know that run ten bolts reliably? Why do our rears hold up to this big abuse as well? Its been fun but, I am done I don't want to debate this any farther.

Well, okay then, I just shared my opinion on this :) Didn't mean to hurt anyone.

You didn't hurt me, I just think that we won't ever convince each other that one is right or wrong. I like a good debate, but after this I think we would be going in circles.

Re: ? SyTy Transfer Case Strength

No, you made a good point, I didn't know that someone upgrade stock t-cases. So its like your kung-fu is better that mine now :)

I just used some numbers, did some math and thought that it won't be a big deal, but you kinda proved me wrong with experience :)

Re: ? SyTy Transfer Case Strength

The v6 blazer was rated at about 5k lbs towing.

The V6 Blazer had a different TC and just because it was rated at 5000, it doesn't mean the TC is the weakest link.

The other problem with tow ratings is they are compromise between engineering, marketing and accounting (warranty claims). Their is no tow rating standard. As a boat owner, I have found some vehicle struggle at the towing rating while other are clearly are underrated. Basically tow rating is all over the place.
