No. Yes. Numerous part numbers in manual.

There is no difference between the V8 and the 4.3 liter 4L60s. The subtle changes in the 700 are similar to the differences between the LS1 in the Camaro and the LS1 in the Corvette. Same thing but little changes add up to big differences in performance. The only 700s that were used behind 2.8 liters had a goofy bellhousing. They won't even bolt up to a Sy or Ty and had a miriad of failure issues and were consequently done away with (era of the 7 vane pumps and no aux valvebody). The only 4l60s that should even be considered for rebuilding are 88 and up models. The case was changed in 87 1/2 model year to accomodate the aux valve body. The 87 and prior valve bodies don't even have provisions for ecm controlled TCC lockup. The 2-4 servos will fit all 700 cases. That is why they sometimes end up in rebuilt units and then end up in someone's SyTy.

I replaced my transmission inOctober 2000. I blew the forward sprag ( my fault as I forgot to take out of OD when I got off the expressway and when going about 20MPH, I floored it to go around a semi). I bought a part number 8685980 from my local GM dealer. I gave him an old 400 as thetrade in and kept the 700 for a spare after rebuild. Total cost with trade in $800. At first I thought I had a problem because the engine would free wheel when letting off at 50 to 55. I actually discovered this was normal and i just had not noticed it before. The GM repair department gave me not a single hassle but replaced the main valve body with a new one. This tranny has been excellent. I figured if the original that cmae from the factory lasted almost 10 years then I should just get a GM replacement. I have been very happy with that choice.

Merk got a a factory replacement tranny, and said he had to do a few hundred dollars worth of changes to it, to make it into a "SyTy" tranny. I'm not sure about the exact details, but it's very possible to get a "replacement" from the dealer that doesn't have the right stuff in it.

STAY AWAY FROM GM SYTY REBUILT TRANSMISSIONS......VERY FAR.

You never know what you will get. Depends on how close it is to quitting time. I think that they run to the parts bin, grab a handful of parts an stuff them in.

If you have a original unmolested syty valve body NEVER EVER let a trans shop, the dealer, or anyone else exchange it for another.

BTW this is from my experience and from stories from other owners.
Merk also can add to this on his experience.

That is exactly why I posted in the forum. I found a GM rebuilt to be perfect for me. Now for you guys that build trucks for 10 or 11 second 1/4 mile drags every weekend, it is not enough. For serious drag racers they sell rebuild kits from $500 to $2,000. The more serious you are the more dollars you will spend. No one can gurantee that you will not blow out a transmission but the beefer it is built, the more abuse it can withstand. Since I seldom abuse my Sy, a stock transmission is perfect and I have security knowing it is under warrenty by a reputable dealer. I do not think everyone that has a transmission problem needs to spend 2 to 3 Grand for a replacement. It's up to the individual what they need, but I felt obligated to refute some of the bad press given to GM Parts. These are great guys with great products and they stand behind them. If I was not pro GM, I would not have a Syclone and Corvette but would have one of thoese four letter words. Peace!

race or get outta the way
fwiw

the base price for the full competition thm400 automatic shifting racing trans i bought from rossler was 1195.

to that i added jw ultrabell, output shaft and adapter, TC, and a little R&D time from carl rossler to bring the total to like 2300 for a tranny that no one who reads this board can break!

thought you might find this interesting.

only steers and queers come from Texas, and you aint a steer! Stanley Kubrick
i reccommend you do a little more research than what is hear say like building it for 10 sec applictions, whatever, point being the dealer wont sell you what you need and it will cost 2x as much, do your god damn homework.

I can't remember it has been so long ago. A c ouple of guys on the forum replied that their SY would act that way also. Somewhere in the 50 to 60 MPH range is where OD kicks in and if you are right on the edge of that D/OD border when you let off just a little bit it stays in OD and free wheels and then when you push down on the acclerator it reengaes and picks up speed. If below 50 and in Drive instead of Overdrive, this does not happen. It actually is not even noticable unless you really play around with the accelerator using just a very ligth touch around 55 to 60 and even then its hard to notice it.
