Re: Syclone #136

Quick question: I have a set of Kenne Bell headers on the shelf, and the "eyeball" test shows me that the turbo is going to sit a bunch higher that the stock manifolds. Do you have any pics of that specifically? I'm wondering if my downpipe will fit or if I have to remake it.

Thanks! And everything is looking great!

I measured the atr headers against the stock manifolds on the workbench. The headers put the turbo 1/4" closer to the engine. Header gaskets will eat up some of that, but 1/4" is pretty close to stock

Re: Syclone #136

Update.

I drove the Syclone to the Buffalo meet at Niagara Falls. I had a great weekend. On the trip home the truck developed an intermittent ignition retard. Just before I got home it became a steady knock retard. Since I haven't had the engine out in a couple years, I decided to pull it out for an inspection. The bearings and rings looked great. So now I believe the knock probably was coming from a loose suspension, or exhaust hanger. The roads on my route were extremely rough, so in hind sight a loose exhaust makes more sense.

But I also had another reason for pulling the engine. I purchased some heads a few months back. So I upgraded my heads from L35s to Brodix -8. I'm hoping to match my performance from last year, just with less boost.

I have some parts getting coated, but I should have the truck running again in about a week.

Stay tuned.

Re: Syclone #136

Update:

The Syclone had a decent summer, it made it to the Niagara Falls meet, the Ohio meet, the NASTE meet, and a few short distance road trips.

I am going to park it for the winter and make some adjustments. The truck needs brakes and tires. It despirately needs a nice steering box, instead of the junk ones i have been using. I am going to adjust the intercooler abit and try to keep my intake temperatures down a little more. I'm also going to make a new downpipe, and upgrade my 38mm wastegate to a 44mm, and try to get a more direct shot to the valve for a little better control. And i will put the truck on a little diet to shed some unwanted pounds.

At the track it went 100mph in the 1/8 with a splash of race gas, and 20psi. A few more test & tunes and it should run solid 10s with little effort.

Some iwiring cleanup is also on my list.

Can't wait until the spring meets.

Re: Syclone #136

i started working on the truck this morning. I pulled the carpet to remove the jute padding beneath. The OEM carpet with jute, and heat material weighed in at 23lbs. I am going to remove the jute and heat pads for weight savings, then reinstall the carpet.

Edited: jute padding weighed 9lbs bye itself

Re: Syclone #136

I think I put about 200 miles on it this summer, lol. Still dealing with some power loss. Possibly still ignition, maybe driveline. I'll have to make time to sort it out, probably rent a dyno.

Went to a track rental last weekend. I got 2 passes. Checking the grip with drag radials. Times were off, a 12.3 and 12.7. I was launching at 1psi, lol. The times weren't impressive, but I did backhalf 28mph on one of the passes to a trap of 119. Running 18# and 19deg. The trans was shifting at 5000, instead of 5900. So there's 1 more thing I need to sort out. Anyways, here's a video from one of my passes.

New Years thread bump!

Starting to get some warmer days, so spending more time in the garage. I’m making a few changes this winter. Mostly things I’ve bought over the last couple years. New fuel pump & rails, fuel injectors & regulator, ECU & engine harness, ignition system, steering box & shaft, driveshaft loop, and cold air intake. I’m giving the hoses and harnesses a nip & tuck.

Pic from this weekend. It'll be running for spring at Gary's house.

Re: Syclone #136

Today is the 10 year anniversary of my truck’s build thread.

So I’d like to give an update of change I’ve made recently. I’m tying up some loose ends and cleaning it up for Carlisle. I’ve had a lot of new parts sitting in boxes from years past, and I’ve tried to put everything on over this winter.

I upsized the fuel system in case I want to run E85. I replaced the Bosch fuel pump with a Magnafuel. I bought a set of RPM billet fuel rails awhile back, and had them anodized black. Also, I switched from 80# hi-z injectors to 120# low-z. Along with a new regulator, and a flow-through E85 sensor.

I upgraded computers from the FAST Classic to a more modern Haltech Elite that I picked up last year. The new ECU lets me run distributor-less ignition. So I have 6 LS3 coil packs mounted behind the engine. EFI Connection got me a hall-effect cam sensor, and a 60-2 crank reluctor. The ECU also has a plugin for a Flexfuel sensor, and boost controller. So I use the original ABS sensors to read my front-to-rear slippage, then reduce boost and timing to maximize traction. I bought a universal Haltech wiring harness with fuse block. I got all new sensor connectors and pins from EFI Connection, and made a brand new engine harness. I put EGT bungs in the header primaries so I can use EGT probes to balance the fuel on each cylinder individually. The ECU uses a CAN network, so I have an LCD screen for a digital dashboard, along with an OBD2 port. The tuning software is open ended, so you can use any input to adjust any output with the tables being completely customizable. It has engine protection protocols that I set to help keep the stock crankshaft together.

I made a new 3” downpipe to better fit my truck. The last one I made worked good for manifolds and rubber motor mounts. After adding solid mounts and headers, the clearance wasn’t there. So I fabbed a new one, and moved the wastegate location further down and out of the way. I switched over to a chambered muffler, and put on my old side exit tip.

I’m also making a new cold air intake. My first attempt proved to be a good idea. So I’m just refining it a bit.

And last but not least, I swapped out the Syclone seats. Last year I added a chromoly rollbar and 5point harnesses. But bringing the harnesses over the top of the Syclone seats was uncomfortable, and they kept sliding off. So I bought a set of seats from Procar. They are fixed-back fiberglass tub, so it’s lightweight about 22lbs, compared to the stock 36lbs. Procar doesn’t make mounting brackets that fit the Syclone. So I sent them fabrication sketches, and they made me a set of bolt-in seat brackets. Right now I am still using the seat sliders that Procar gives you, but I feel the seats sit up too high. So I will be ditching the sliders, and making fixed seat legs to lower the seats about 2”. But that will probably be next winter.

I hope to see everyone at Carlisle.

I was changing the wire loom from corrugated to woven last weekend.

Looks good Brandon, feels good to be close doesn't it? I've been close for 3 years but it can get hard to stay motivated.

Your fuel rail x-over is interesting, have anymore pics of it?

It's just tubing with tube nuts. Nothing exotic.

Re: Syclone #136

I started the truck for the first time in 9 months last night.

Everything worked great, no crossed wires, no fuel leaks. I have a few evenings left to get it cleaned for Carlisle. Unfortunately i dont think i have time to cut and weld on the muffler, or to sand and paint the new cold air box. But that can all come after the show. I just finished wiring the LCD dash display, datalog, traction control, and launch control switches.

And while i am "at work" i put together a gauge display using my pathetic MS Paint skills.

Trying to get it more like the stock dash

So now it's time to scrub and vacuum this dirt ball. See ya'll at the show.
