ok my temperature sender was on the wrong side (passenger ) and there was a plug on the drivers side . so we tried to switch and the plug on the drivers side wont come out . we tried everything . if i cant get this plug out is there any other place i can get a temp . reading from . we have the plug real stripped and tried all easy outs . i do not want to have to pull motor to get this done . im not workin on the truck i am relaying things to the mechanic . thanks alot . plz need ideas

Re: stripped plug on head

Did you try to torch heating the plug that help
when i removed mine from the block !!
You can install this temp sensor at the front of
the lower intake manifold where the outlet housing
sits it will give a good feedback to your temp gauge !!

is there any threads or do i have to drill and tap the lower intake manifold

Re: stripped plug on head

Why do you want to move the temperature sender from the RH head to the LH head in the first place?? Is it because the wiring harness will not fit? You will get the same temperature reading from either side. . I must assume the RH head has a plug that will not come out and the harness will not reach to the sender if it is on the LH side.

The cylinder heads are interchangeable. Some one may have swapped them around at one time. It is only for the gauge. Maybe you could make an extended wiring harness if you really want the guage to work.

yeah its only for the gauge . when the engine was assembled the sensor was installed on passenger side . i can extend wiring but it is right next to the pipes and i dont think the wires will last under all that heat . i cant get either side out now . the plug on the drivers side where the sensor should be is stripped really really bad , and i cant even get to the passenger side to change it to the right sensor .

Re: stripped plug on head

Have you tried jacking up the front of the truck and removing the front passenger wheel?

Changing the sending unit from the passenger side isn't really different from changing spark plugs on the passenger side.

we tried to get the plug on drivers side out first and it is not coming out its stripped and its not coming . i heated , used easyouts . the wrong sensor is on passenger side and we cant match it . both wheels are off . where else could i put this sensor . i dont know if i should even try to put the sender on passenger side .ill be fighting to get the bad one out and it might burn up with all that heat from the pipes

What do you mean you can't match it? Do you mean the new part is a different size than the one in the head?

If that's what you mean you ordered the wrong part. The sending unit in the head uses a 13/16" wrench and the one in the lower manifold takes a 3/4" (19mm) wrench.

How dd you use the easy-out on the plug? You could drill through the plug and then really use the easy out. JB weld to seal it if you really get stuck.

Re: stripped plug on head

Like I said in a different post, my (first) engine builder did this shit and it's a complete pain in the ass. You're going to cuss, break knuckles and do everything possible to get those plugs out, but with the engine still in the truck, it's going to be a goddamn impressive feat if you can accomplish that.
From my experience, anyone who sends their block to a builder in the future and they are going to re-build it up to a short block, make sure to tell those idiots PRIOR to them tearing it down to make goddamn sure that they don't plug the holes that's are plugged on the stock 4.3's. Of mine, they plugged the oil sending line to the turbo on the drivers side of the block and then the coolant return line from the turbo to the block on the opposite side. And trust me, I tried to get those goddamn things out and didn't have any luck at all. Especially trying to work around the tight ass engine bay that we have.

On a somewhat related note, someone with additional knowledge than my 1st grade level may be able to answer this: There is a temp sensor on the top front of the intake, yes? What is the purpose of that one vs the drivers side one? Which one reports to the gauge on the dash? IIRC, someone told me that the intake sensor reports to the ECM and the right hand side one reports to the dash gauge? Thinking outloud, but could you just splice the harness to run both of those harness wires to that intake sensor? Just thinking aloud and not too edumacated on these things, but hey, sometimes you shoot in the dark and actually hit a target!

EDIT: MrKing verified that intake sensor goes to the ECM and head sensor goes to the gauge. What's going to be the major difference in temperature between those 2 locations? Assuming intake sensor will read a somewhat lower temp since the coolant there is coming in straight from the rad? But will it be THAT big of a difference from the right head sensor?

At leat his information is correct, instead of opinions that some one is trying to pass off as fact.

Re: stripped plug on head

another idea....the redneck way

weld a 3/8 extension to the plug really good...then heat the plug up some more with torch and spin it out with ratchet.
