Strange Clunk in Ty

It is only one clunk. It sounds like someone hit a pot with a wooden spoon. It sounds like it is coming from the rear. It only happens when I start the truck in park and put it into gear. It makes the clunk from park to Reverse, and from Park to drive. It does not matter if the truck is worm or cold. It just started making this noise. The clunk is getting louder. I don't know.

Any update?

You sure are making a lot of posts in a short period of time. Are you trying to get your post count up so you can sell something?

NO, Randy. But thanks for asking. As far as an update on the clunk noise. I have not attempted to tackle that project yet. It started clunking more often sense I last posted. Right now it is sitting in the garage and I am driving the Sy around.

Looks like a broken u-joint at the trans side of the drive shaft. Thanks guys.

Has anyone attempted to change a u-joint in the vehicle to keep the trans from leaking fluid all over the garage?


If not. Besides from a spare yoke. What did you use as a plug to keep from making a mess.

Transmission tailshaft plug. Should sell them at the parts store. Alternatively you could possibly only jack the rear of the vehicle up high enough to keep all the fluid in?

I call it a "butt plug". I have one you can borrow. (For the truck, silly).

All done. It ended up taking me 40 minutes to do both u-joints because, as it turns out one of them did not fit and I had to go back to VatoZone. I don't know if it was a mistake on there part or if my 92Ty has a non stock driveshaft. I ended up using 2 MOOG U-joints part number 235. Thank you guys for the help.

pictured is what I removed from the Ty. Both front and rear used the same part.
