I've posted a few times on the starter relay issue as have others. What the copper strap does is cause the starter motor to start turning before the gear is engaged. The starter gear and flex plate gear don't like that.

The relay "fix" takes the current load of the starter -solenoid- (not the starter itself) away from the key switch. You still have to deal with protecting your new wiring from heat.

I bought a nice 50amp (probably over kill) waterproof relay also. I get the clickies once in a while. I figured I have a 25 year old starter and should change that first to see if it cured it.I could not get the code to work, so I make am still looking

For those wondering what the heck Dave is talking about look here. This gear rode in a helical grove in the starter shaft. When the starter ran inertia caused the gear to travel down the shaft and engage the ring gear. When the engine started the flywheel tried to over spin the starter and drove the gear back where it came from. This system was used extensively in early Fords and countless other vech. The advantage, if you want to call it that, was no starter shift/switch solenoid was required. Just a much simple electrical solenoid or, better yet, a switch that you pressed on with your foot. The common failure was the spring breaking or the drive bolts coming out.

Trouble is the name stuck and we now call all kinds of starter drives "the bendix."

When you stick to the truth you don't have to remember what you said to whom. Makes life much easier. How the politicians manage this is completely beyond me. :rotf:

Old school ppl like you are few and far between. It ****ing sucks but that's the world we live in.

I loved the hitachi starter from hood, until it didn't jive with my scat HD flex plate, and yes OEM specs. All the other starters I have laying around engaged fine. What I noticed with the hitachi is that the gear is half as thick as my CVR and stock starters. The scat flexplate is a tad bit thicker, only problem I've had with the hitachi is with this flexplate, all the factory starters have been fine.

I would be surprised if hood would knowingly sell a bad product. He seems to know his stuff.

I replaced a bad 6492 starter ( ls version of the 6449 ) at work the other day so I took some pics of the internals. I also had the opportunity to take a couple pics of a denso starter my dad has for his typhoon. The denso is very nice because of the adjustable mounting plate to rotate the starter whichever position is most convenient. Also I want to clarify what I said about the hitachi starter as I have had a couple questions about them. All I said was my dad saw a lot of those starters come in to the rebuild shop with a multitude of issues. From that I have decided to stay away from them for myself. If anyone here wants to use or sell them that's not my business we are all entitled to our own opinion.

If I go with the 6449 starter Jimmy recommends. Can I use the stock starter bolts? or will I need shims? Truck is 100% stock.

Autozone has the following caution note:
Notes: CAUTION! DON'T DAMAGE YOUR NEW STARTER OR FLYWEEL!. When using this starter to replace earlier designs (vehicles prior to 1994), you will need to replace the starter mounting bolts. Use GM #12338064 (4 3/8" long) or equivalent. This is REQUIRED for proper fit and drive engagement. Premium reman. Models equipped with 9 or 11 tooth drive gears interchange without modifications required
