Starter Alignment Problems?

Had the same 'click, click' problem with my Ty once too often and decided enough was enough and went with what I thought was the best starter around - GM Performance Parts Hi-Torque Mini-Starter, #12361146. This high performance gear reduction starter is designed for 1958-96 Chevrolet V8 and all V6 90º engines (200, 229, and 4.3L). It's the one with the red bowtie on the case.
Anyway, I figured GM right, should be a direct bolt in, no sweat. Now it does come with shims but I really didn't think I would need them, but what happens when I start the motor is a terrible sound comes from the starter after the motor fires as if it isn't disengaging properly.
Anybody out there had any experience with this starter that could shed some light on my problem?
Thanks.

Re: Starter Alignment Problems?

Try installing the shims. Sounds like the pinion might be too close to the ring gear. I've had aftermarket starters make noise when installed and had to either add or remove shims to correct the pinion-to-ring gear clearance.

Re: Starter Alignment Problems?

the directions for the cvr ministarter tell ya how much clearance you need between the gear and flywheel. i found a papaer clip measures the same. allways keep a papaper clip in the tool box now.... yes put the shims back in there and measure.

Re: Starter Alignment Problems?

Just put in a new Duralast starter, needed 4 shims. Still is a little loud.
