Started Engine Removal...Questions (sorta)

Well, I started in on my engine removal today...I only spent 2hrs on it and I was taking my time mostly poking around the engine bay removing the 1000's of zip ties in the engine bay. These didn't come stock I know for sure...just like the Jerry Rigged (how do you say redneck in German) City Lights that definately did not come stock.

- Yanked out the german battery and dumped it.
- Noted a completely rusted out battery tray
- Poked at the rat's nest a few more times with a very long stick

My first question is what do I work on tommorrow? Should I aim for the accessories and take them off next? I'm not in a real big hurry but for each I hour I'm in the flat bay, I pay $3 so I shouldn't dilly dallel.

What's the best way to to clean up a rusted battery tray? Should I take a wire brush to it and spray paint it with engine paint?

The battery wires were spliced with other wires for the City Lights...I'm almost thinking it's battery relocate time...does the ATR bed fender relocate kit give me completely new wires?

I'm sure tommorrow I'll be posting with a whole new set of questions as I start to get into this more.

not stock
Sandblast the battery tray. Wire brush will take forever.

Are you rebuilding the motor completely? If so...i'd just take off everything possible now, upper/lower intake, turbo, xover pipe, etc.. just to get the thing as small as possible when you yank it out.

Forget fooling around with the battery tray :)

If you want the hard stuff to do first start with the transmission. If you get throught this every thing else will be cake.

If you want to ease into in start with the electical connection & grounds, fuel rail, then the accessories, radiator hoses etc.

I'm replaceing the block/heads, and swapping intakes from one engine to the other. I've got the intercooler here...and in a few minutes I'm going to crank up the heater here in the basement to start cleaning it.

Dave,

What do you mean transmission? Start un-bolting it?

unbolt the tranny last it will drive you nuts. couple of the bolts are insane to get to.

take off everything you will want to install on your new "donor" motor. the intake, the accessories, everything on top. take the hood off. mmmmm....... im sure there is lots you can take off to keep you busy for a while. i think i would take everythign off i could, and bolt it to your new motor, so when you actually remove it, you can go ahead and install the new one. and do it all in a week. dont wait a month and then wonder what your gonna do with all the left over parts

You will need to remove the prop shaft, starter, TC inspection cover and remove the bell housing and TC bolts.

I know what that means...that means that my propshaft will be last to go back in. :evilbat:

Actually that's not a stupid statement. I was thinking about just that today...I almost started to undo the IC then I realized that I needed to drain it first...logical train of though brought me to realize I needed to drain the rest of the motor and accessories tommorrow/today when I get to it.

btw...my timeframe is all screwed up...not only am I +6hrs from east coast...but I go back on night night shift friday night (tonight ugh!) So more to follow in 18 hours.
