Squeaky front end....need suggestions...

I have a squeal in the front passenger side of my Sy. If I hit the brakes it seems to stop till I let up off the brakes. I know what you are going to say, It is not the brakes ! ! ! I though the very same thing. I jacked the truck up and removed the wheel and found nothing out of place. So I lay under there and turned the wheel by hand, The squeal is coming from the top of the CV shaft where it bolts to the axle tube flange. I just replaced this CV shaft about 2 weeks ago. Is there a bearing behind the flange the CV shaft bolts to. I would think there would be but have no book to tell me what’s in there. The squeal sounds like if you rake metal across steel and get that real ear shattering squeal. Any thought here. I was thinking of trying to get under there in the morning before work and spray the whole area with white lithium spray. Anyway, If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it.

take the wheel off, and remove the brake caliper with the pads, this will eliminate the brakes completly from the equation.

if it still makes the squeal, you need a wheel bearing. if this is your case, get out your pocketbook

I know, I know its not the brakes...that being said...the sound made and the description you gave sound like an indicator tab on the inner brake pad. They squeal till you press the brake, then they stop till you let off the brake. If it isn't that when you check pad thickness you can yell at me all you want.

They squeal till you press the brake, then they stop till you let off the brake. If it isn't that when you check pad thickness you can yell at me all you want.

And it could be as simple as that!

I vote for time to change brake pads. Its either that or the wheel bearings.

Well I found the problem and fixed it. It was the brake pad squealer ! ! !

I took off the wheel the other day and looked at the squealer on the pad and it was not touching. I did not notice though at that time that the rear pad out of the set (the one to the inside of the caliper) also had a squealer. This is the first time I have ever seen a dual squealer on a set of pads. Ohh well, A+++++ for all the responses. You were all right.

Thanks for all the help, I am now on to my next ongoing issue. 1 down, 50 more to go ! ! !

Glad that I was correct on this one, I didn't want to get yelled at. Glad you found out now rather than after the rivets chewed "speed" grooves into your rotor. :tup:

The inner pads usually wear faster than the outers since they touch the rotor first and also ride it ever so slightly due to rusty older caliper slides. Also if they are riveted pads they can be awful close to being worn out and still look thick due to the rivets taking up so much pad thickness.




I have a funny story about me as a dumb kid and brake indicators hitting and making all that racket.

I had a 77 305 2bbl firechicken, I was about 16-17 at the time and my brakes started squealing until I would use them so I would just drive around with my foot on the brake slightly to keep them from squealing. Well after a week or so of baking the pads they started squealing all the time so I got the bright idea to spray my rotors down with WD40 to stop the noise. I was such a car-stupid kid. :rotf: I knew how to add gas to the fuel tank and add a quart of oil once a week to offset the engine burning a quart every week. That car was such a POS and I beat the crap out of it.
