shifting problem, help help

ok i just bought a 93 ty from socal, local dealer had it. i dont know its history other than it has 68k mileage.

here is the problem

if you floor the gas.. truck wont shift to 2nd until you let off the gas. if you drive normal it will shift fine.

problem 2 is this.. i can only count the trans shifting 2 times.. meaning there is no OD.. i have the car in OD the whole time but im cruising @ 65mph and my RPM's are 3500. if i floor it from there, there is no downshift at all.. just builds boost.. there is no way i can drive 90mph or i would be in the redzone.

i live in Utah, and the only people i somewhat trust are the GMC dealers. anyone have any advice or help?? please? i dont want to drive the truck till i figure this out.

If the only people you have to trust there are the GMC dealers then you are in some trouble. From what it sounds like, you got a Truck that is soon in need of a new transmission. There are a couple of guys here on the board who can build a really nice tranny that is *near* unbreakable for everyday usage.

I know of Waller, Blake and RPM all do tranny's. You will have to talk to them about the tranny as I just know when things go wrong not what happens to be wrong. A good Sy-Ty tranny will run you any where from $1000-4000 depending on how breakable you don't want it to be

First off I'd check your TV cable adjustment, read this:

Take a look at the piece in the green circle. To properly set the TV cable, you push in on the metal "D" tab(in purple circle), then push that piece in the green circle towards the drivers side as far as it will go. You can put your fingers on the cone shaped piece or the square piece right next to it....as they will move together. Once that is pushed all the way over, release the metal tab. That is maximum TV pressure. Then rotate the throttle linkage slowly to WOT. You will hear a few clicks, that is the teeth on the back side of the piece you just pushed over to the drivers side. Once you've rotated it to full WOT, you can take it out and test drive it.

The 1-2 shift should happen between 11-16 mph at 20% throttle
The 2-3 shift should happen between 24-30 mph
The shift to 4th at 44 mph.

The teeth on the TV cable become worn after time. I would suggest replacing the cable if your trans is being rebuilt.

So just to make it clear. Pulling that piece in the green circle towards the passenger side will lower TV pressure. Pushing it in, towards the driver side will increase TV pressure.

After you set your TV cable, see if your shifts occur at the MPH listed above.

sounds as if it's got a stuck or sticky governor and or a misadjusted tv cable(if the shifts are harder than normal @ part throttle) . very easy to remove and clean yourself or take it somwhere and have it done. also a good idea to have the fluid and filter changed at the same time.

Yeah, I also suggest the TV cable. The second Typhoon I got had exactly the opposite problem. It would shift at like 8mph into 2nd and subsequent gears REALLY early. Through the cable adjust, I could dial it in. Now it shifts excellent. One of the easier procedures to do on our trucks.........that's for sure.

Yes, write down those MPH's I listed on a piece of paper. After you set the TV cable go out and drive the truck at about 20% throttle and see if the shifts happen at the correct MPH.

I would suggest you change the fluid, filter and add a bottle of red lubeguard. I sell the filters and lubeguard. I also have derale transmission pans with cooling tubes. Its important to have at least one form of aftermarket cooling method for even a stock truck.

If the TV cable adjustment doesn't fix it, then look at other possibilities.

As far as the governor:

Its not really all that hard. The toughest part is popping off the gov cover. Here , read page 4.....

Pull the gov out and read what the pdf says about everything moving freely. If you think its not working properly, I have brand new GM syty gov's for $40.
