Rubber boot on front driveshaft?

Hello truckers,

I looked underneath my truck last night and found that the greace retainer rubber boot on the driveshaft going to the front diff is shot. Can I replace that with one from a regular Jimmy? If not, will anything else fit? And what's the procedure for separating the UV from the shaft?

TIA,
Shady

I assume you're talking the CV shaft (goes to the wheel from the front diff), and not the propshaft (runs from transfer case to front diff.) correct? In either case, its easier to just get a new unit and ditch the old one. You never know what crud is kicking around in the joint now that the boot is split open, and just rebooting it, trapping everything in there is a bad idea. CV shafts can be had for around $65 remanufactured, or $140 new from any parts store, and a propshaft can be had for around $350 I believe. Search for "Gilbert" and buy that propshaft if you need a new one; ditch the stocker.

If it is torn, its done. Right now would be a great time to ditch the stock one and purchase the Gilbert propshaft. Read below for some information on replacing the stock flange and oil seal while you're doing it.

You can get a stock unit from Napa and other places for around $350 after exchange of your old one, or you can get a Gilbert shaft for around $375 from one of our board members, or you can contact Bruce at Gilbert Driveline directly in Manchester, New Hampshire at 1(603)623.3061. The Gilbert is proven to be the best propshaft available for us, is lighter than stock, has no boots to rip, and I believe is yet to break. Below are the pics of the Gilbert and the stock shaft. The downside is that you need to pull the stock flange off the front differential and put on one for the Gilbert shaft; an easy job, but another step. If you choose to go with the stock unit, you can simply bolt it back in, but you run the risk of tearing the boot again and being SOL.

Hello Adam,
I'm talking about the propshaft (from TC to front diff.)

You might be able to get a prop shaft boot repair kit from Morgan.

Hey, thats not a fair weight comparision.
The front flange is weight with the stock shaft but on Gilbert's there is no front flange.
Front flange is that thing that goes into the front differintial.
Gilbert's front flange is much heavier then the stocker.

I mailed out a stock shaft without the front flange and it was about 16lb (ups scale)
Recieved my Gilbert with the flange and it was 17lb (ups lable onthe box)

I would say the stock weight about 2 lb more than Gilbert's and not 9.

Fair enough. I linked to pics more to show the difference than to show how light it was.

Re: Rubber boot on front driveshaft?

Thanks for the advice guys, however being half a world away makes it difficult for me (both in terms of time and shipping costs) to order the Gilbert unit. It's just simpler for me to look for a replacement boot on the local market (even one from a different make and/or model - what counts is whether it will fit.)

Believe me,from experience you better get a sy/ty specific or you'll be changing it again real soon. I tried some other ones and they seriously lasted about 10 miles.

If you can't get one locally I'd give Captain Morgan a shout and see if he can help.

Also might be a good time to look into getting a propshaft loop, since all trucks with the stock shaft can benifit from the protection.

Can you explain more???
sure, he means if or when your stock propshaft breaks, you can either spend the $75 on a propshaft loop and have the added protection, or $2000 on a transmission when it breaks the case and you need to get a new one of rebuild it.

simple enough.
