Revs per mile?

How many revolutions per mile difference does it take to fry the viscous coupler in the transfer case?

I'm looking at a set of tires with 809 revs per mile and 814 per mile. Will this be enough to cause damage?

A 5 rev per mile difference will usually work out to be a difference of 3/16" in diameter (depending on actual tire dimensions). You could work this out with tire pressure to obtain near exact revs per mile. Either way, a 5 rev difference is a 0.614% difference (based on 814 revs) and IMHO, that's near-as-makes-no-difference the same. Do eet.

My advice has proven to be unreliable. Caveat Utilitor.

3 revs is negligible. Odds are there are plenty of AWD vehicles out there with a bigger mismatch due to Front to Rear tire wear and/or tire pressure differences.

Hell I guess. Every time I find a low mile Sy the owner changes their mind about selling it...kind of like me. I'm looking for a C6 to satisfy my speed demon until I can build a proper Sy.

Won't speak to the previous comments but an answer to your question is that you will probably exceed those numbers just going around corners. Sooo unless you plan on getting stuck in a round-a-bout, not a problem. :lol:

I run wheels with a bigger variance , and its been fine for the last 10k miles ... hope this helps :) ---

3/16" (or 6/32") is the difference between fresh and worn tires.

For reference, our 2006 Audi A4 specs a 5/32" MAX allowable tire wear difference (front to rear) in the manual. It has a Torsen center diff I think (Not sure EXACTLY what is in ours, but I know some of them had the Torsen, so I assume the spec is written for that model). I'm certain from both an engineering and practical application standpoint that the viscous Coupler in the Sy/Ty usage is more forgivving than a torsen would be, although some additional heat buildup might be a concern in the viscous coupler.....resulting in the need to change the fluid more often.

You'll be fine with a 3 revs/mile difference. If you like I can do the math on how many extra rotations of the VC that is per mile/year/decade/etc

BTW, deleting posts because you're mad or wrong is dumb. If you make a mistake, own it, then make it right. Its the only answer

I was wondering why this came back up. Saving a DaveP rant with decent information and thoughts behind what is otherwise a torturous read.

Anyone know where he got the spec of 320ft-lbs to rotate the Viscous Clutch one revolution? Seems to me most trucks don't make that much power at cruising speeds without boost. Especially in overdrive, with a locked torque converter.

Also, how is the front diff screwed up here? Is he saying that the additional load the transfer case is applying to the front diff is being resisted by the tire size mismatch? Shouldn't that claimed 320ft-lb load be an even split between the two axles, or at least a 60/40 split between the two axles? How was the rest of that truck maintained? How many total miles on that truck? Obviously it was modified to have different tire sizes on it, what else was changed. 10.xx revs difference at the transfer case is still less than 1% BTW, there are just more revs to count there than when measured at the tires.

We haven't even scratched the surface on the myriad of other factors that come into play in determining how fast those components wear.

One anectdotal failure does not a case make. Many anectdotal successes a better (but not complete) case makes, however.

I'm not sure who's 100% correct, but the key takeaways for me were:

1. Mismatched tires are a problem
2. If there is only a slight mismatch you can adjust with tire pressure, this is most likely something that you should be doing anyways.
