Request: Chip Burning HowTo

I'm not looking for what to put in the chip to tune the truck, but what hardware and PROMing software (like Promgrammer) is needed and how to use it. Searching doesn't help a whole lot when you're totally clueless, and I have yet to see a SyTy-specific chipping page. Once I'm actually able to make changes, I think it'll be easier to get familiar with the tuning... Being a computer geek, info on chip emulators is also appreciated as well.

I'll probly put something like this together once I get the diagnostic article done... lots and lots to cover there.

I SO want this one to happen.. Some ppl make it appear to be a cake walk... To me its all Greek (no offense to anyone from there :) ) and no matter how much I read I cant get even a slight handle on it. Maybe Im just a tard. Dunno

Try this article by Traxion on Thirdgen.org. Very informative tells you what to get to get started and it will all apply to the 749 ecm as well. Here is the link http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/promintro.shtml

HOLY EXPLODING INFORMATION BATMAN !

Thats an awesome link..

As far as emulators are concerned, I have the EPROM EMULATOR PRO 128 from LDTI http://www.ldti.com/epm_emu.htm (get the one with battery backup.)

I havent used it yet on the fly (still waiting for intake manifold mods to vortec heads) but alot of listers have used it and had no problems with it.

The one with battery backup is a must if you want to drive around with the laptop disconnected.

That is a good link, I ran across it in the past.

The info he provides about the flash chip works for Syty's as well. I have one handy I may use at the track (no need to keep spare eproms around, no need to burn 16programs to my Ultimate setup, no waiting for eraser).

Weird question guys....

I went to http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/promintro.shtml and have read quite a bit but being a noob (understatement) to chip burning I have a pretty long list of questions that I have yet to find an ans for.

So... What'd be the best way to get ans? Listing all the questions at once or rattling off a few at a time, getting feed back, digesting/unerstanding that feed back, then posting more???

All I can say is that site is JUST what Ive been looking for all this time. Yeesh, what a bunch of info but its good understandable for a puter moron like myself.

Questions to follow later (cant read my own damn writing so I gotta go look it all up again  )

your not alone david. having downloaded promgrammer and recieved a few bins (thanks jason  ) i looked up and down the list. still a little intimidated. but no where near as before.
so any questions you ask david will probably answer the same ones many others have.

i have been waiting for a thread like this...

First stupid chip noob question (many more to follow)..

Can you use this thing http://www.ldti.com/epm_emu.htm to actually run your syty off of and make changes in real time instead of burning a chip, trying it out, burning another chip for more changes, etc, etc??

If I understand this thing correctly it looks to me like you dump a "base" program (for lack of a better term) in it, make changes in real time, and once the info is tweaked to your liking then burn this final info on a chip.

Looks to me like it would save the hassle of burning a new chip for each change/tweak/whatever you do.

Or maybe Im just a tard and need to read/research more before I ask stupid questions :-?

Yes you are correct ! That was my reason for purchasing it. If you get the battery backup model you can also unplug it from laptop and tuck up out of way for a temporary fix.

thats my idea instead of burning, erasing, burning, erasing.....

No such thing as a stupid question coming from an intelligent person... I certainly dont know all the in's and the out's but I did see this setup in operation at the nats this year. And, when I have an intake manifold to bolt up to my Vortec Heads I will be playing around ALOT with it. Should prove to be the funnest project yet on my little blue money pit.

Tydriver,

Thanks for the info.. Im taking "baby steps" here as chip burning is going to be like learning a new language.

I KNOW now I shoulda payed more attention during the semester that went over machine language, DOS, HEX, etc instead of partying my ass off... Ughhh. Classic case of "I'll never actually use this crap" back then.

Hey mods,

Should I be posting this in "tuning"? Kinda seems to me like Im hijacking the thread here.

Whadda I do? Stay here or move to "tuning"?

Hmmm...this year it was the Canadians with the impressive truck.

Next we have a 10-second pass via the redneckerson. I think in his mod list it was something about Hillbilly Engineering. Myclone, I am nervous - but at the same time extremely excited to see the sh!t you'll try with this chip stuff. Just 'cause you have the ability to fix what you break - wish I had nads half the size of yours. But the nice thing about small nads is it makes Mr. Winkie look bigger ;)

LOL.. Thanks for the props Dave.. To be honest I havent a clue about burning chips but Im learning a little at a time. There is just so much info to wade through that its kinda over whelming to a noob but I aint giving up. Like you said.. If it breaks I can fix it. I might bitch/whine/complain but I can fix it none the less.

As for nads/winkie..... All I can say is that a 6'3" 240lb frame makes the "package" look awfully dinky. Kinda like looking at a average sized fishing boat in a garage but put that same boat in the middle of the Atlantic... Looks pretty damn dinky then  :D

If you keep eating Ms. Myclone's cooking - you are gonna have even bigger problems - or should I say smaller problems ;)

Wouldn't it just be easier to get accel or some other dfi? What am i missing here? I just don't get why you would not just want to make changes while driving and not have to worry about burning anything?

For me personally it was a pros/cons list someone posted between the factory ECM and FAST sytem. Im not willing to give up some of the things the factory ECM does that FAST doesnt (TC lockup, etc).

Would FAST be simpler for someone that cant even figure out how to open a BIN file to look at like myself? Oh hell yeah. Am I gonna pay $2k for FAST/syty harness? Oh hell no... Not when I can struggle for a while but with some effort maybe learn how to burn my own stuff for a fraction of the cost.

Lastly.. If I can actually figure this stuff out its a personal accomplishment for someone whos not the sharpest tool in the shed.. and I may be able to help other ppl that honestly want to learn it too.
