Removing transfer case question

[2500avalanche]

I have a leaky transfer case (where the 2 parts are pressed together). Leaving a lot of fluid on the ground.
How hard is it to take off, and re-do the seal? It looks like a rtv sealent of some sort.
When taking it off, any precautions?
Any other gaskets I should replace?
THanks, just tired of leaky spots on the ground!

You must buy what gm calls an adapter seal for between the two. It's not too hard if your using a hoist or even doing it on the ground.

Have a second set of hands or put a jack under the side where the yoke for the prop shaft comes out to hold it in place. I would drain and refill on the ground (don't remember capacity) and I used RTV with success.

you have to rotate the case almost vertical to clear the crossmember. I bench press it when i take mine in & out, lots of fluid running everywhere.

Wrap it in a bin bag before you pull it off. Rotate it and then pull it out - lot less messy. Don't recall the seal being anything special. RTV for when it goes back on.

Mine just started leaking in the Sy right after the Ohio meet. I will be redoing mine also. Its not that hard to get out, just akward.

Don't recall the seal being anything special. RTV for when it goes back on.

That's what I thought too, but it's been so long since I had one apart I don't remember.

There is a gasket for it, I used one when I did mine. I don't have the part# for it though.

mine started leaking this year so i too need to do that.

For anyone that has done this... How long to do so? About 5 hours or so? I know how to take the prop shaft off, but any suggestions with the drive shaft?

It's just a 4x4 transfer case to tranny seal cheap at dealer all day long.

Disconnect propshaft from transfer case. Remove 4 bolts from rear end yoke to drop driveshaft.Disconnect bracket on top of case that holds fuel lines.Take off trans to case brace.Disconnect electrical connector. I always drop the PS of the trans crossmember to facilitate removal.. Take out 5 bolts that connect it to the tranny,drop it out then put everything back together. Couple hours or so.
