rear locking unit...

i need to replace the rear locking unit....what is the popular carrier for our trucks... eaton,powertrax,etc...

i thought about a spool or mini spool but am worried about street driveability....ant help here.... what do you guys think is the best bang for the buck?

The original was a Eaton Governor Lock. It isn't the best. You are right about not wanting to use a spool on the street. The Eaton posi is very good for street/strip use. If you use a Power Trax you will need a standard differential case to install it in. I have a Power Trax Lock Right in my 4X4. It has worked very well for over 8 years now. It's street maners are not as good as the Eaton posi, but it locks up very well. There is also the Torsen differential. It works very well for road racing or auto X, but sometimes doesn't lock up well when drag racing. I don't recommend an Auburn. That's about it for the 7.5 rear end. If you swap it for an 8.5 or 12 bolt there are more options available.

I have an auburn pro, as far as where to get them check the camaro boards they go cheap there because the upgrade to 12 bolts or 9inch rears.

I got my Eaton from my brother ... he worked for them at the time, so he got a steep discount and gave it to me for Christmas

Also if you wanted to go the route of the powertrax, they have a part number to install it in the factory gov lock diff case. Just FYI.

I think i will be going this way for both front and rear.

I'm not sure if that's a bright idea or not.....

The Gov-loc is usually thought of with the same fondness as an enemy grenade with the pin out...

Those things break pretty easy, only question is whether it has a weak case or fails because of other parts failing. I personally think it has a weak case (but that's my opinion).

Either way, think long and hard about putting that in a Gov-loc.

john, all trans said that if i wanted to rebuild the stock carrier i could get the clutch packs from a gm dealer. otherwise i could buy a auburn or eaton from them.what are your suggestions?you know what i am wanting to do with my truck.

The Governor Lock is rebuildable, but you must have the tool that removes the governor. The clutches and all of the other parts are available from GM. I have rebuilt many of these. I think the Eaton posi is your best choice. I don't like the Auburn at all. If you could see what is inside a rear end with a worn Auburn then you wouldn't even consider it.

I know this is a old thread but if anyone were to search they might find this helpful.

Just called the dealer and the clutch packs are $50 for one side and $130 for the other. Mabe this will help someone in the future.

When mine was acting up, I replaced it with a Detroit Locker. Been in since 2005.
