Rear end question

I just purchased a sy that had been sitting for 10 years. Upon rolling it to get it on the trailer I noticed that when you turn the wheels the rear end acts like its been welded. It almost seems like the guy welded the rear diff. Which I don't understand why. Chirps the rears when turning sharp. Any info on what to check. I've searched on here but didn't find what I was looking for. Thanks.

Re: Rear end question

First pull the cover off and see what you got. Maybe somebody put a spool in it to use for track duty only. :dunno:

Re: Rear end question

Called the previous owner who's owned it since 94 and he said that he never modified the rearend. I'm not a rearend guy( when it comes to vehicles), so I don't know what to look for.

Big in the rear
I know mine hopped and chirped the rear tires when at full lock. Not sure why as its a stock rear I'm sure. Mine would still one wheel peel with the propshaft out, and it wouldn't chirp the rears as well.

I don't know why it does it, but I think it's a fried transfer case not slipping and binding everything in general that is causing it. But just a guess from me.

I'd holler at HopnDude,he's our rearend expert.

 No worries! Full tear down & inspection instructions sent! I went 8.5" cause I didn't wanna wait for the small 7 5/8" to blow out. And Jimmy....you mad bro?!....

Re: Rear end question

chirping while turning would lead me to the transfercase

I told him, that there's a Astro Van t case in great shape at a bone yard near me. Well, I think they have two to be honest, and thats just one yard, I haven't been to the other bone yard near me in a few months. But I will be later today for a few small nuts/bolts (I hate using non oe bolts, erks the f*ck out of me). Any way, if his t case is bad, is there any parts he could use from the Astro t case?

Re: Rear end question

If we were talking about front diff i would probably say maybe transfer case but we are talking about the rearend. I dont see how the transfer case could be causing the rearend to lock up but but again im no expert just sharing my 2cents.
Best of luck and let us know what the issue is and how you resolve it.

Re: Rear end question

I would think it could be either - and I would suspect that unless you've got a lot of experience that you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two.

If the VC is locked up, then in a turn the rear wheels have to skip in order to stay aligned with the front (like 4WD). I'm ASSuming on a Syclone the rears would skip, since the majority of the weight is going to be on the front making the rears the easier wheel to skip.

My call is pull the propshaft and see if it still does it. If it still does it - I agree with Jim service the rear diff.

Or wait for Dave to reply, but I suspect he's going to tell you that you need to verify if it's really the rear diff locked together, or if it's the TC\VC locked together - I can't think of a way to tell aside from pulling the propshaft.

Re: Rear end question

Thanks for all the input. Yes it's the rear. And from what I can tell as I'm hanging out the door while turning, it's not both rears skipping its the inside rear tire depending on which way you're turning.

I just figured that you forgot more about rearends than I know.

Re: Rear end question

Here's how to tell:

1. Jack up the rear axle so both rear tires are off the ground. Leave trans in Park. Spin one rear by hand. The other should turn in opposite direction. Turn it faster. The gov-lock should lock, and both tires will stop when it does.

Ugh. Duh. Talk about not seeing the forest through the trees.

Re: Rear end question

Ok. Test 1 completed and performed as stated. I didn't have the chance to do the transfer case test. I just don't understand how the tc could be giving me this issue. Does anyone know how much ballpark it is to have the tc rebuilt or if there is anything special to know about rebuilding it?

Picture a truck turning a tight corner. Just as the inside tire takes a shorter track than the outside tire in the rear diff, the rear wheels take a shorter track around the corner than the front wheels. For the same reason you need a clutch in the rearend, you also need a clutch to take-up the difference between the different tracks of the front and rear wheels. In our case, that clutch in the transfer case is called the viscous coupling.

For rebuild \ replacement info, there are a number of threads on this... just search.

Either way, you should setup the "test" on your truck to verify, and also so that if you junkyard for another transfer case you know how to test it - or if you replace the VC in yours you know how to verify that it's working correctly.

Re: Rear end question

You guys are great. Pulled the prop shaft and no more issues. Looks like I'm on the hunt for a tc or a tc rebuild. Is it not a good idea to drive it without the prop shaft?
