Dream: 6LV8 Turbo Bravada
Hey Guys....
I've got a quick 4L60E question, and since you're the most knowledgeable group of folks I know I figured I'd ask it here.
Here's the skinny.
Truck is a 1999 Bravada with 4.3l v6, 4L60E, and awd.
Driving home tonight, trans didn't shift into 4th after slowing down to pay toll. No noise, drama or anything to say its having a bad day. Wasn't even hard on the throttle (and that's only with the 190hp V6).
Figured it might be an electrical gremlin. Got to the other side of the bridge, stopped, put in park, flipped engine off & restarted, hoping everything was fine. Accelerate away, and it takes forever to shift (like 5,000rpm in 1st) and then drops like a rock to 3rd (skips 2nd completely). Still no 4th.
Still had a while to go, no SES lights or anything, so I slow down to 60, and drive the remaining 15 miles or so to the baby-sitter's to pick up the baby. Make it there without any significant difficulty (or noise or anything else) except no 2nd & 4th.
Check the fluid level while I'm at the sitters, and its just on the bottom end of the hot range. Not out of limits that I can tell, but might have been short if the trans was running hot.
When I go to leave, Suprise!, no reverse.
Checked the service manual, and the only cause for No 2nd / 4th / Reverse is broken reaction shell splines (or something to that effect). Looks and sounds expensive and / or time consuming (especially since I think those parts attach to the output shaft, which I think is the first part installed in the trans (and therefore last out)).
So, here's my questions:
1.) Do I need to bother re-checking fluid level?
2.) How terminal is this (ie any chance that it is just short on fluid or something else easy)?
3.) How likely is it that if the reaction shell or whatever part it is that broke that it didn't take most of the rest of the trans with it? I'm sure the answer is an "only a teardown will tell" but what is your guys experience.
4.) Shouldn't it have tripped a SES light?
Previously, I was kind of on the fence as to whether I'd keep the 4L60E / 4L65E or step up to the 4L80E when I swap in the 6.0l V8 that is in my gameplan. Beginning to look like the wise choice would be to do that now....Ah....Decisions decisions.
