Please Help, newbie transmission question

Hello everyone, sorry for the newbie question but i'm looking for some advice. I am probably going to buy a 1993 Typhoon with 67K miles on it very soon in Southern California (Orange County). The problem is this:

When I took it for a test drive under hard acceleration the transmission shifted very hard into 2nd gear, and then seemed to not engage into 3rd or 4th, all while under hard acceleration. The whole thing seemed to kind of stall and sputter.

Under normal driving the transmission shifts fine.

Also, there was SEVERE detonation while under hard acceleration and the Typhoon did not have the acceleration I would have expected it to.

I know I need to have a transmission shop look at this before I purchase, who do you recommend and how much do you think I could possibly spend in the worse case scenario?

I'm posting this in engine and transmission because it kind of relates to both. Thanks for all the advice. Kaleb

the trans should shift very hard into 2nd thats normal, but not shifting into 3 or 4 is not normal. if this is the case your looking at anywhere from 1500-2500 to rebuild it. and make sure you have somebody do it that deals with syty specifically. so many good syty's have been totaly ruined by shotty trans shops, make sure you find somebody that has done them before if your in cali I reccommend you get in touch with mike lee at www.Raceprovenmotors.com

Well in my opinion, I wouldn't purchase it unless it was really cheap. 3rd and 4th gear aren't going to have as firm as a shift as first and second. The main thing is that it shifts into OD, and third without slippage.

Detonation is a big issue on these trucks, and if it has a lot I would walk away, unless you are getting a good deal.

As for transmission, you are probably looking anywhere from 1-4K depending on whats wrong or what option you take, and who installs it.

Good luck.

thanks for the replies, I didn't check if it would go into OD, as for the detonation it sounded REALLY loud under hard acceleration. Is 9K a good deal for this Typhoon? I ran a carfax and it showed actual miles as 66K. Carfax shows it was shipped to Japan where it spent 4 years. Would you still buy this Typhoon? I would be willing to drop in about 3-4K if I had to to make it run top notch.

it might be worth 9 if the outside was top notch as well as the interior. if you cant get it for less then look elsewhere bc good running trucks can be had for 10-12.

The engine could have major problems, or just need an ignition tuneup.

The 1-2 shift is supposed to be quite hard. I don't think it was an issue from the factory (it may have been), but some rebuilds at least are missing a sleeve or something which allows a WOT 3-4 upshift. However, if it won't go into 3 or 4 at all under load, it sounds like it may be a bigger problem. I wouldn't spend less than $1,000 on a SyTy trans rebuild, and that's assuming no major parts need to be replaced. Mine was about $1400. If that one has major problems, you might be looking at a lot of replacing...

See if you can hook up with a local SyTy-er. They'll have a better idea of what to look for on the Ty, and you can ride in theirs (if it's running) to get a better idea of what it should be doing.
