Got it free. came out of a 03 burb 4x4 big block, Thought it was an 80 but when i pulled the vin it was an mn8. It got it from our body shop, they were putting a frame on it and had the engine, trans, transfer case and exhaust all on the engine hoist the one of the straps broke and it fell 4 ft cracking the bell housing. they had welded it up but didnt have the engine on it when they did it so one of the holes was off. so they said screw it and bought another one.

Dont know if i should try and fix this case or find another one, gm dosent sell just a case for this trans.

Guess it depends.

How far off is it? If you know already?
What is the level of your skills? (do you know how to use a dial indicator and that type of precision measuring equipment?)

I'd suggest you indicate (measure) the main shaft relative to the bellhousing bolts and bellhousing mounting surface using a dial indicator (and associated base). Compare that to another known good trans or the back of an engine. That should tell you if just 1 is off or if more than 1 hole is out of place or the mounting surface is distorted. May not be all that easy to do the measurements. And you may find out that its way off.

But hey, it was free, probably worth investing a couple hours and maybe $25 worth of tools into (if you don't have them already). And if you're not interested, I might be.....

Re: picked up 4l85-e

Why they welded it up without it bolted to something is pretty...well...dumb.
Anyway, was there any other damage? They don't just hit and stick. It most likely took a few hits. I've got a 4L80E 2000 case I can get some dimensions on for you. You'll end up having to take it to a machine shop before your done though I'm afraid.
Can you tell if the input shaft took a hit? Check the endplay and it should tell you if the snap ring and stuff got blown out the bottom of the overrun drum.
The case changed inside for the overdrive clutch crown. They added a steel pin in the case that the crown torques against to help prevent the crown from walking around and breaking the lube bolt. Call Transtar and see if they can get a case and how much it will be. They have access to a LOT of stuff you can't get anywhere else.

Re: picked up 4l85-e

I have been so busey I havent looked at it since i brought it hom, I did take a tape and compare the holes to a block i had laying around and it looked ok. I think the problem has the surface wasent flat and when they bolted it up after it was welded it cracked. Our tranny guy hwo put it in is 3 miles away at our other shop and i havent had time to go ask him.

Now if I could get really lucky and somthing stupid happen to a lq4-9 at the shop ill be all set.

Did anyone ever hear what the final word on what happed to parish's 80-e. running 10's on a junk yard tranny

I haven't seen an update from him, but haven't been looking real hard.

The junkyard tranny has been out and gone for a while. Most recently he broke the FLP (or is it FLT? I can't remember) Stage 5 that he had in the truck. I believe it snapped the input shaft, but again, can't be sure.

The engine and trans were both back at their respective shops, at the last update I saw, a month or so ago. Obviously the trans was being repaired, but the engine builder wanted to pull it down for inspection. Not sure if all the parts and pieces have made it back under the hood of that blue beast.

Good luck with the tranny. And with that LQ4 or LQ9 falling off the hoist. Just don't be too close or they might think you were involved and get suspicious and not give it to you. If it does happen, then you can take the same route as TyDriver and go LSx V8....

And BTW, you're stealing my idea. I already want to run a 6.0l and 4L80E. But it'll be ok, because I want to do it to a '98 - '00 Bravada instead.
